Treat Your School Lunch with Rice Krispies Squares Brown Rice #ApproveThisLunchbox

We’re in the home stretch, folks! Summer’s winding down and we’re eking out every minute of sun and relaxation we can. With less than a week to go though, there’s no escaping reality. I need to pick up supplies for our first week of school lunches.

When you have picky eaters, it’s important to give them choices. My kids are far more likely to eat their lunch when they have some control over what’s packed in their lunch box so that’s definitely one of my strategies. The same old things can get getting boring from day to day, so why not make a game out of it? Here’s one idea for keeping things fun!

Instead of me deciding what to put in their lunches, my girls wanted to vote on what would go in their lunchboxes on the big day. I thought that was a great way to get them involved and keep things fun!

I know it’s important to pack a sandwich with lots of protein to keep them fueled for a busy first day, so I offered them the choice of egg salad or ham and cheese. There was a bit of discussion about the relative pros and cons of each, but ham and cheese emerged as the unanimous winner. (In case you were wondering, the deciding factor was its ability to be pulled apart and each part eaten separately. Yeah, my kids are strange.)

Next up, water or milk? This one was a tie, so water for Tee and milk for Kay. And then the girls voted on fruit: apple or mandarin oranges? This one ended in a tie as well. Tee wanted the apple, and Kay requested the oranges.

We finished up with a couple of dessert choices. I certainly don’t pack treats in every lunch, but I want to make their first day back at school extra special so they got to vote: oatmeal cookie or Rice Krispies Square? This one was easy for them because Rice Krispies Squares Bars have been a family favourite for years. No surprise, they were the clear winner here!

I used a little sleight of hand and gave them each one of Kellogg’s new Rice Krispies Squares Bars Brown Rice, made with 8 grams of whole grain brown rice, 6 grams of sugar, and no artificial colours. I was curious if they’d like them as much as the original Rice Krispies Squares we’d known and loved forever. The new brown rice cereal bars look just slightly darker, but would the kids notice a difference?

Put everything together, and we have a school lunch my kids are guaranteed to eat, right? Right?

It was such a nice day we decided to take our lunches outside to eat. The girls ate everything, including the Rice Krispies Squares Bars Brown Rice. They thought their Rice Krispies Squares were the most delicious way possible to finish their lunches and never even noticed anything different about them. They ate them all up, licked their sticky fingers, and gave their stamp of approval to the entire lunch. This was a winning strategy for sure!

    • My kids actually didn’t notice any difference between these and the regular Rice Krispies bars. I can tell there’s a very slight difference but it’s hard to describe – they’re ever so slightly more chewy and in some bites I can taste something that might be the bran. But really, they’re very similar. Let me know if you try them!
