With a rapidly growing preschooler and toddler, it seems like somebody is always hungry and asking for a snack. When Yummi Pouch asked me to test out their reusable food pouches, I figured I’d just take them along with us for snacks on a shopping day trip or give one to Teagan to take to preschool. Little did I realize how indispensable they would turn out to be almost as soon as they arrived.
You see, last week, Teagan was home sick with a high fever and no appetite to speak of. But smoothies go down easy, and Yummi Pouches made it fun for her to eat them. For a couple of days, that’s all Teagan would eat. I threw together a Greek yogurt smoothie with raspberries and cinnamon, slightly sweetened with maple syrup. She loved it so much, I thought I’d share my recipe with you.
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
- 6 raspberries
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- Blend all ingredients together in blender and serve.
I received this Little Munchkin set including six standard 6 ounce pouches, six extra caps, a 16 ounce funnel pitcher for easier filling, name labels, and fun owl stickers. I also received two mini pouches and two sport pouches to try. We’re an environmentally-conscious family, and we do our best to reduce, reuse, and recycle around here. I don’t buy commercial snack pouches for several reasons, most important among them all the disposable packaging, the cost, and the excess sugar. So for us, these Yummi Pouch reusable food pouches win on all three counts. They can be washed and refilled over and over again through the large zip lock opening on the top. Making my own applesauce or smoothies is way more economical, and I know they don’t contain anything other than real, fresh food.
One minor issue I noticed was that Teagan had some trouble getting the last of the smoothie out of the pouch. She kept asking me to squeeze the last bit into the side with the spout so she could suck it out. I think this is an issue with all snack pouches though, and she’s already starting to figure out how to squeeze it. “Like toothpaste, Mommy!”
Yummi Pouches are dishwasher and freezer safe and have a gusset on the bottom which lets them stand up on the counter when you’re filling them. They’re also BPA free, PVC free, phthalate free, recyclable, and fully CPSP compliant. Yummi Pouches come in 3 sizes. The standard pouch holds 6 ounces. Mini pouches hold 2.5 ounces and are perfect for babies. The newest sport pouches hold 10 ounces and allow adults to take fitness shakes, smoothies, and juices to go.
I think my girls will get a lot of use out of the 6 ounce pouches, but I don’t really see myself using the sport pouches. I prefer a travel cup, even if it’s not quite as portable. Honestly, I feel a little silly sucking my smoothie out of a pouch, but the girls think they’re lots of fun so I’ll probably use these for times when I need to bring a larger than snack serving for my three year old. I could see these being really handy to take along on summer picnics where they always have bigger appetites.
I’m a mom so I want to talk a little bit about clean-up too. I washed mine by hand using a regular bottle brush. I think it would be a pain to clean these without a bottle brush, but with a brush it was really straightforward. The outside is rectangular, but on the inside, the bottom of the pouch is rounded so there are no corners for food to get stuck in. That’s a simple yet smart feature that makes a big difference to the washability!
