DK Books Face-Off: Star Wars or Frozen #TWCMgifts

2014 HGG banner

The great rivalry in our house right now is Star Wars versus Frozen. This Christmas, a lot of the girls’ presents will be Star Wars or Frozen themed, but who knows which one will win out?

I know my kids aren’t the only ones. With the recent release of the Star Wars VII trailer (well over 100 million views and counting!), interest is running high and my four-year-old can hardly wait. Yet Frozen is still hanging on to its title as most watched movie ever in my house. I’ve picked two selections from DK Books that are on our gift list this holiday. These should be on your radar if you have a Star Wars or Frozen fan in your home too!

Star Wars in 100 Scenes

Star Wars 100 Scenes“Relive the most dramatic and iconic moments from the epic six-part saga, Star Wars, one spread at a time in DK’s Star Wars in 100 Scenes. Presented in chronological movie order, every hand picked scene is explored and explained. Learn in-depth facts about the key characters, droids, vehicles, and locations of each scene. Bits of real-world information are scattered throughout to give insight into the behind-the scenes world of the Star Wars saga.”

This iridescent hardcover coffee table book offers a great walkthrough of the first six movies of the Star Wars saga. Each of the 100 scenes is presented on a two-page spread with a bit of background, some smaller secondary photos, and a quotable quote. Small insets list notable characters, locations, vehicles, and creatures. Behind-the-scenes info and trivia add an extra level of interest. While this book is intended for younger fans, even hubs enjoyed flipping through the pages.

Star Wars 100 Scenes - Their most desperate hour

I really like that kids don’t have to be able to read in order to follow along. The action is all there in full colour movie stills! This will be a fun book to get Tee ready for Episode VII next year.

Frozen: The Essential Collection

Frozen Essential CollectionAnd then on the other end of the spectrum, we have this beautifully boxed Disney Frozen: The Essential Collection gift set containing two must have Frozen books: the Disney Frozen Essential Guide and the Disney Frozen Ultimate Sticker Book.

The hardcover Essential Guide walks through my girls’ favourite movie chronologically, focusing on the characters, locations, themes, and iconic moments. The images are lovely, and the book is sprinkled with interesting tidbits and true/false questions taken from the movie. You’ll find the complete lyrics from all the songs in this book, but I was disappointed to find nothing here that was not already in the movie. Having said that, I don’t think it’ll matter in the least to my girls, and that’s who this book is aimed at.

Tee loves her stickers, so I know she’ll be really excited about the included softcover sticker book that comes with over 150 reusable full-colour stickers.

Frozen Ultimate Sticker Book

And as a nice little extra feature, the slipcover plays an instrumental clip from “Let It Go” when you press on Olaf on the cover. (Parents, note you can replace the battery on this. And your kids will play this often enough that you will probably need to.)

Gift It!

Both books can be purchased from Amazon.ca, Amazon.com, or wherever good books are sold.

  • My 8 year old son would LOVE this!! He is a Star Wars fanatic. The last three Halloween’s in a row he’s been someone from Star Wars: Hi favourite character Luke Skywalker in 2012 (with his twin sister as Leia), Captain Rex clone trooper in 2013, and General Grievous in 2014. His bedroom is completely Star Wars from ceiling to floor…it even has a “dark side”. Did I mention he loves Star Wars? We went to Disneyland last Christmas and he got to be a Jedi and fight Darth Maul. His head almost popped off he was so excited. Oh, yeah, and he loves Star Wars ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Lol, that’s awesome! I’d love to take my family to one of those Star Wars weekends at Disneyland, though I’m not sure who would be most excited – my daughter or my husband!

  • I’d like to win for my son. His favourite character is Mulan, he says. Yes, I know. I’m pushing him for a real answer…. okay, he’s saying Chewbacca.

  • I want to win this for my son and husband! My son is mistakenly thinking that Jar Jar Binks is his favorite character. We are trying to reeducate him now!

  • I want to win this for my brother who has been a huge Star Wars fan ever since he was a little kid. He loves R2D2!

  • DK colours would be a wonderful for any child with a curious and inquiring mine. This would include some of my grandchildren, especially my youngest granddaughter. I think she would absolutely love this book.
I love colours, too, from the black of the little dhickadees who come to our feeder;, to the pink glorious sunsets that we enjoy even this time of year. I love flowers and enjoy planting them to contrast or complement.

  • My son is a huge Star Wars fan. He loves Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. He has gotten in all the characters from Star Wars Rebels. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I’d love to win this for my son. I’m not sure who his favorite character is because he loves them all! Maybe Han Solo.
