This post is for all my last minute, procrastinating readers, just like me.
I have to confess I haven’t finished my taxes yet. I know I’m not the only one though. Come on, show of hands, who else has left it right down to the wire? Thank goodness the Canada Revenue Agency has extended the tax deadline to May 5th. I know I’m going to need every extra minute. Yeah, I guess I like living life on the edge.
I was having a public panic moment on Twitter the other day when @TurboTaxCanada reached out and offered to help. You rock, TurboTax! So today I did my taxes, and the difference between using this software and the old school paper return is like night and day. I was impressed by how simple it was to work through hubs’ and my joint return. Everything was clearly laid out step by step. Click yes or no, answer the questions, enter your numbers, and the program does the rest. Most terms were hyperlinked to explanations or tax help, and new deductions for this year were clearly marked and linked to an explanation and requirements for eligibility.
TurboTax helped me determine the best person to claim a particular credit to maximize our return. They also offer a cool RRSP Wizard that calculates the optimal amount of an RRSP loan I should apply for so that my tax refund will be just enough to pay back the loan. It was too late for this year, but I definitely want to use this tool to optimize my RRSP contributions next year. I was able to easily track my progress though my return, and it really did take less time to finish than in past years.
If you haven’t filed yet and you’re starting to feel that tax panic, I have some good news for you! I’ve partnered with TurboTax Canada to offer FREE last minute online returns for 5 of my readers.
