We all know tis the season for toys under the tree, but here’s an idea for a different kind of gift. How about a gift that fosters literacy and creativity at the same time as your child is having fun? How about a gift that excites and engages your child every month? That’s Peekapak!
First I need to point out that Peekapak is Canadian. Yay! So many children’s subscription boxes are available in the US only, so it’s nice to see a homegrown company offering unique and quality boxes. Peekapak is designed for children aged 4-8 years and vetted by teachers and early childhood educators. Each monthly box includes an original softcover storybook, all the supplies you need to build two or three related play props, and a parent’s guide.
The friendly folks over at Peekapak sent us a box and a sibling add-on pak for my girls to check out. My kids aren’t totally on board with the whole sharing thing yet, and they both love doing crafts, so I was really happy to learn about the sibling add-on option. With the sibling pak, you get doubles of everything, including the book, for only $9.99.
We opened up our Peekapak as soon as it arrived and checked everything out. Here’s what came in our box (two of each):
- Welcome letter, intro sheet, parent’s guide
- The Peekapak Pals and the Day of Dinosaurs softcover storybook
- Plastic globe
- Bag containing paper grass, a natural sponge, plastic gems, fabric leaves, and 2 toy dinosaurs
- Card stock dinosaur background
- Foam visor with adjustable headband
- Card stock sheet with dino hat pieces to cut out
- Bag containing glue dots, a sponge, green paint, and popsicle sticks
- Paper plate
- Card stock printout of Peekapak Pals figures
- Fabric tool bag containing safety scissors and crayons
We started with the story. My girls don’t know much about dinosaurs, so this was a great opportunity for them to learn more. The storybook introduced five different dinosaurs – stegosaurus, tyrannosaurus rex, brachiosaurus, pteradactylus, and triceratops. We had fun learning to say their names, but really the kids just wanted to get crafting! The back of the booklet contained the instructions for making a dino hat and a miniature dino terrarium. Each craft came with full instructions along with difficulty and messiness ratings for quick reference.
Tee chose the terrarium project to start with. Even though Kay is younger than the suggested age for Peekapak, she was able to do this one independently. She loved playing with the toy dinosaurs and making her own terrarium. And then she discovered what an interesting sound everything made when she shook the plastic globe – poor dinos!
Here’s Tee’s finished project.
Then we made the dinosaur hats. I cut out the paper decorations for the girls and they glued the pieces on. They looked fantastic! Tee spent half the evening showing off her hat and roaring like a dinosaur.
While I helped Kay with her hat, Tee practiced her cutting skills on the Peekapak cardstock figures and glued them on to the provided popsicle sticks. The glue dots were iffy for Tee, so I ended up peeling them off the plastic for her. These mini puppets were a big hit too, with (you guessed it) lots of roaring.
The girls had tons of fun with their Peekapak box, and they’ve gone back to play dress-up with the hats several times. The thing I appreciated the most was that absolutely everything was included in the box, down to the safety scissors, glue dots, and paper plate and sponge for the paint (which we skipped this time around). That makes Peekapak perfect for using away from home. Visiting relatives for the holidays? Going away for the weekend or taking a trip to the cabin? Maybe camping next summer? Take a Peekapak with you and you’re guaranteed hours of play-based learning with no worries that you’ve forgotten any necessary supplies at home.
