Eat Smart, Eat Fresh, Eat Good!

On a typical weekday, I drag myself out of bed at the last minute, get the kids ready for school, jump in the shower, and put in a full day’s work. Then I rush down to the kids’ school to pick them up, race home, then start preparing dinner so we can eat at a halfway decent time, clean up, then put the kids to bed. Sound familiar?

I do my best to feed my family good, fresh food. Good food is the basis of good health, and I know that what I feed my kids now will influence how they eat as teenagers and even as adults. But cooking everything from scratch every night is a lot of work, so a little shortcut now and then is a good (and necessary) thing. Luckily, I recently discovered Eat Smart Salad Kits. They’ve made adding interesting and delicious salads to our meal plan a lot easier!

Eat Smart is the first brand in their category to commit to clean ingredients with their No Artificial: Colors, Flavors, or Preservatives label. That means free from high fructose corn syrup, artificial preservatives, hydrogenated fats, as well as artificial colours, flavours, and sweeteners. Nearly 90% of Eat Smart products already meet these standards, and they’re on track for 100% by the end of 2018. When you see that label you can be confident that you’re serving healthy, clean ingredients to your family.

At Home: Gourmet Vegetable Salad Kits

I like to include a plate of raw veggies or a salad with every dinner, and Eat Smart’s chef-inspired salad kits make it so convenient. They’re perfect for busy families like mine! Each bag combines a delicious pre-made blend of veggies and superfoods, tasty toppings, and a specially blended salad dressing – just enough for a family of four. We eat these salads as is, or if I have a little more time, topped with last night’s leftovers. I love how versatile they are! Here’s how we’ve been adding these salads to our family dinners.

The Sweet Kale Salad Kit includes kale, green cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, chicory, roasted pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and a creamy poppyseed dressing. I don’t even like Brussels sprouts usually, but I really like this salad.

Eat Smart’s Strawberry Harvest Salad Kit combines kale, beet greens, broccoli stalk, carrots, red cabbage, crispy quinoa, almonds, feta cheese, and a strawberry vinaigrette. I served this with a roast a few days ago and added some fresh sliced strawberries for extra yum!

And then there’s my favourite, the Sunflower Kale Salad Kit. This mix has broccoli, green cabbage, kale, chicory, dried cranberries, and roasted sunflower seeds, and a delicious honey dijon dressing. I added some sliced sweet and spicy balsamic chicken on top, and it was a big hit for dinner the next night!

All three salad kits are guaranteed No Artificial: Colors, Flavors, or Preservatives.

At Work: Salad Shake Ups

If Eat Smart Salad Kits are perfect for home, their Smart Salad Shake Ups are ideal for work! These prepackaged bowls of veggies and superfoods include salad dressing, toppings, and come in their own sturdy bowl with a lockable lid and fork. They’re a quick and easy way to pack a healthy lunch on the go, and when you like to sleep as late as possible like I do, this time saver is a lifesaver for me!

Sprinkle on your toppings, add as much or as little dressing as you like, lock the lid on, shake it up, and eat! I like to take some grilled chicken or a sliced hard boiled egg and throw it in for a complete meal that will keep me full and focused on my work. The best part is these salads help me stay on track. When I have a healthy meal waiting in the fridge for me, I’m much less likely to grab a sugary snack when I get hungry.

(But wait! When lunch is done, don’t throw out the plastic bowl and lid! They’re reusable and recyclable. I’ve discovered these are perfect for storing LEGO bricks and even homemade cloud dough between play sessions.)

Salad Shake Ups all come with the No Artificial: Colors, Flavors, or Preservatives label and are available in three flavours:

  • Raspberry Açaí – Shredded broccoli stalk, green cabbage, curly kale, radicchio, dried cranberries, sliced toasted almonds, dried blueberries, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, and a raspberry açaí dressing.
  • Avocado Ranch – Red cabbage, Savoy cabbage, shredded cauliflower stalk, curly kale, shredded carrots, shredded cheddar cheese, roasted sunflower seed kernels, crispy onions, dried currants, freeze dried corn, naturally flavored bacon bean flakes, and a creamy avocado ranch dressing.
  • Tropical Lime – Green cabbage, broccoli stalk, Napa cabbage, curly kale, Italian kale, dried pineapple, dried mango, dried papaya, white sesame seeds, golden flax seeds, roasted red quinoa, thin crunch noodles, and a creamy coconut lime chili dressing.

  • These look really good. It’s nice to have a prepared salad sometimes because I find that salad prep from scratch can be a lot of work!
