I’ve noticed that even families who don’t typically use cloth often purchase reusable swim diapers for their kids. I used to be one of them. They’re cute, they won’t end up in a landfill after a couple hours of use, and they do the exact same thing as the disposable brands—namely, keeping solids out of swim areas without absorbing liquids.
Like many others, I’d purchase our cloth swim diapers from major retailers. They’d be hanging up beside all the other summer baby apparel, and they were always sized (i.e. 0-3 months, 3-6 months, etc.) with bands of elastic around the legs and tummy similar to those old fashioned plastic covers people used to put over cloth diapers.
What I didn’t know back then was that some cloth diaper companies also design swim diapers, and they are far superior to what you’ll find at major stores. These people really know what they’re doing, and not only will their diapers be easier to use, they’ll be more comfortable for your baby and last a lot longer too.
After using a wide variety of cloth diapers on both my kids, I’d definitely say that Funky Fluff is somewhere at the top of my list of favorite companies (check out my Funky Fluff Lux diaper review here). They recently gave me one of their new one-size swim diapers to try on my 18 month old, Riley.
With 4 generous rise settings, two rows of 5 hip snaps on each side, and crossover snaps, this swim diaper is designed to fit babies and toddlers from 7 to 35+ lbs. At 20ish lbs, Riley is in the small rise setting and still has 3 hip snaps left, so I’m certain we’ll get another summer out of this one. If you purchased it for a newborn, you’d be able to get three years of use from birth to potty training.
The inside is mesh, which cleans really easily, and they’ve added double gussets around the legs to really protect water sources from contamination. These cloth diapers are accepted at all public swimming locations.
Enough about the design, though. I have to tell you how much I adore this coral pink and teal print called Tango. Did you see the extra flamingo detail on the gussets?! I’m actually a little jealous of my daughter’s stylin’ swimwear. No, seriously. When is Funky Fluff going to start making adult swimsuits? I need this print in my life.
You know those special clothing items you’ll always remember when you think back to when your kids were little? I know this will be one of them. I’ve taken a sweet mental snapshot of my girl toddling around her kiddie pool in her little flamingo swim diaper.
In my experience, it’s wise to have a few of them in your collection so a dirty diaper doesn’t have to end your playtime. In addition to their Tango print, Funky Fluff has Maritime and La Vida Loca. So how about one of each?
If I haven’t convinced you to buy higher quality, “pro” swim diapers yet, then picture this: your baby is having a fun time at the pool when suddenly they get that look on their face. You know the one.
You take them to the restroom and lay their drippy bottom down on the changing pad. If you bought your swim diaper from the same place you buy groceries and bathroom towels, you now have to slip wet, poopy elastic down your child’s legs and *hopefully* get their feet out without getting poop everywhere. Now you need to turn it inside out to dump the poop in the toilet.
You get my point.
Funky Fluff designs their swim diapers with practicality in mind. If your child has a dirty diaper, just unsnap, flush the solids, stick it in a wet bag to run through the wash later, and you’re ready to head back to the water with a fresh diaper.
I’d recommend these diapers to pretty much anyone, whether they use cloth on a regular basis or not. Reusable swim diapers are a popular choice, and for good reason. So if you plan on adding a few to your baby’s supply of swimwear, I suggest going with a company like Funky Fluff who really knows their stuff when it comes to cloth diapering.
And when swim time is over, I wholeheartedly recommend a Funky Fluff double pocket wet bag or hanging wet pail to put your wet swim diapers, towels, and swimsuits, and dirty clothes in. The thick PUL and zipper closure keep moisture and any smells inside until you get home, and my Kumbaya print hanging wet pail has room for the entire family’s gear!

I would like to try their hemp boosters. I already cloth diaper, and I love the Thirsties hemp inserts. However, the Thirsties inserts are not contoured. It seems like the contoured hemp boosters from Funky Fluff would be great with a fitted, prefold or flat. The contoured shape is probably better for walking, which my LO is almost doing!
