With two small children (one in diapers), a dog, and a love of cooking with garlic and curry, I have to confess that sometimes my home doesn’t smell as fresh as I’d like. Now I could cover those smells with a commercial air freshener spray, but when we know what that we do about phthalates and their association with breast cancer, asthma, fertility issues and endocrine disruption, and especially as infants and children are known to have higher body concentrations of phthalates than adults, I want a better option. Using essential oils instead is a safe and healthful way to scent and freshen my home, so you bet I was really excited to give Escents’ Droplet Ultrasonic Diffuser a try.
But first I had to find out what an ultrasonic diffuser is! Ultrasonic diffusers use electronic frequencies to create super fast vibrations. These vibrations vaporize a mixture of essential oils and water into extremely fine micro-particles and disperse it into the air in a cool mist. Diffusers work without using any heat which is a good thing, as heat can destroy the therapeutic effects of essential oils. The mist can also help humidify the air, a bonus in the winter or if you’ve got sinus issues.
The Droplet Ultrasonic Diffuser is, unsurprisingly, shaped like a water droplet. (On a side note, all of Escents’ diffusers are inspired by this natural esthetic. Love that.) The diffuser is so simple to use – I love that too! All I have to do is lift up the lid, pour water to the fill line, add 3-5 drops of essential oil, and turn it on.
Good quality essential oils aren’t cheap, so I’m a big fan of how efficiently this diffuser uses the oils. Just a few drops go a long way! I’ve been using Escents’ Rejuvenating Aroma Blend, an energizing essential oil blend of grapefruit and bergamot that can help with sadness, low energy, fatigue, and negativity. I don’t know if we need all that right now, but the citrusy scent sure makes my home feel fresh and clean.
It’s really cool to watch too. When you turn it on, the water bubbles up and starts to mist immediately, like dry ice. The diffuser is virtually soundless and subtly scents my entire main floor, around 1000 square feet. Remember that’s cool mist, not hot steam, so if my kids touch it (and I know they will!), there’s no risk of injury.
The Droplet diffuser has a large 200 ml reservoir so it can run all day or overnight, up to 8 hours. I can choose continuous misting (say, for getting rid of cooking smells) or interval misting (for everyday use), and it automatically shuts off when the tank is empty. It also has a soft amber light on an independent switch so I can easily use it as a nightlight, whether the mist is turned on or not. I really like that I can also choose how bright I want the light to be.
One more thing to note: diffusers do need to be cleaned once in a while. Honestly though, if that means having to take a whole bunch of pieces apart, or struggling to fit my hand into a tiny opening, I’m just not likely to do it as often as I should. Thankfully, the water tank on this diffuser is easy accessible and and exceptionally easy to fill and to clean with a swab or cloth.
