Not too long ago I sat on the nursery floor folding up newborn diapers into a basket and saying a mournful farewell as I made room for them in a storage cupboard. Riley had outgrown them.
It was sad to see with my own two eyes the proof that sheβs already changed so much. That little warm ball of brand new baby girl is gone, and a wiggly, smiley, cooing one has taken her place.
Before I get too sentimental, let me explain what made me think of this moment: rather than start off with disposables like we did with Brooks, I decided to cloth diaper Riley from day one, so I built a small stash of newborn diapers before she arrived. We kept it simple with cotton prefolds and covers. Some I loved…others not so much. But my favorites by far were our Bummis Super Whisper Wraps and Super Brite wraps.
So while I packed those teeny diapers away, not only was I weepy over my fast-growing girl, I was reluctant to say goodbye to such awesome cloth. Some of you know exactly where Iβm coming from.
I was really psyched when Olivia told me that Bummis was introducing a new one size All-in-One Diaper, and they wanted me to try it out! I couldnβt say βyes!β fast enough. Iβd been so impressed with their newborn covers, I was eager to try their latest and greatest creation.
When they arrived, I was a little bit intimidated. Iβd tried lots of other diaper styles, but I was an all-in-one virgin. Nonsensical, I know. Iβd heard they were easier in nearly every way, but new is new, and new always makes me nervous.
Once I took the dive, I immediately understood why some people build their entire stash out of all-in-ones. It takes the tedium out of folding diaper laundry…well, most of it anyway. And their simplicity makes them great to have on hand for babysitters or that less cloth-diaper-savvy parent who shall remain nameless. No hunting for the matching insert, no stuffing, no folding – this is truly as easy as cloth gets.
Anatomy of a Bummis All-in-One Diaper
Bummis diapers are made in Canada using great quality fabrics manufactured in Canada and in the U.S.A., not overseas.
Their All-in-One Diaper has two lining options built right in, and you get to choose how you want to use it. If youβre new to all-in-ones like I was, let me explain how they work: this style is similar to a pocket diaper, but the insert is attached, so thereβs no sorting and stuffing involved. Bummis created their All-in-One with an organic cotton interior, and their attached insert is made of a stay-dry material. Both feel great and have a nice dimpled texture to them.
They come in five colors and four prints. I opted for red and green.
The stay-dry panel really comes in handy for disposing of solids. I like to keep it outside the pocket and against Brooksβ skin so itβs super easy to hang over the toilet to rinse and/or plop. Thereβs no need to spray the entire diaper and end up with a sopping wet mess.
Fit and Performance
The All-in-One claims to fit children 8 to 35 lbs, and I believe it. Itβs pretty bulky on my three-month-old, but the leg and back elastic provide a really good fit, and we havenβt had any leaking issues.
Brooks is somewhere around 23 lbs, and heβs a slender kid, but these diapers fit him really well. With five hip and leg snaps on either side and four different rise settings, weβre able to get a really custom fit with lots of room to grow.
And the snaps they use are definitely worth mention. Iβve been hesitant to have the kids share diapers because of the wear and tear caused by constantly resizing, but thatβs not a concern with the Bummis All-in-One Diaper. The snaps are the sturdiest Iβve seen.
The absorbency has worked well for daytime and nap times so far, and I haven’t had to stuff the pocket with anything extra, but it’s nice to know we have the option if we should use them as overnight diapers. It’s such a full fit on Riley already, it’ll be a while before I feel comfortable adding an extra soaker to hers. Brooks’ on the other hand looks like it would handle some extra absorbency with no problems.
As for washing, these diapers don’t take any extra rinses in my wash cycle or any additional drying time like I’ve heard many other all-in-ones do. Unlike others I’ve seen, the insert is only attached at one end rather than across the entire length, so it washes and dries just like any of my other diapers.
Final Thoughts
I was right to be excited about this new Bummis diaper! Bummis AIO diapers are a little pricier than some other all-in-one options ($31.95 in Canada, $27.95 in the US), but keep in mind you’re paying for a high quality diaper manufactured right here at home from locally milled fabrics and organic cotton. The All-in-One Diaper is clearly made to last, and I love that it works just as well for tiny babies as it does for toddlers. This would be a great one to add to a stash that you plan on using for multiple children over a number of years.
