20 days down, 10 days to go! This weekend hubs and I went to the second Hobbit movie, sans children. Sure it was a weekend matinee, and we had to rush back to release my brother from his uncle duties, but it was awesome to have some time just for us. I think we’ll try to do this a little more regularly.
Sitting in the theatre, it surprised me how much I wanted that bag of greasy popcorn even though I knew it wouldn’t actually taste that good. The smell of popcorn and (pseudo) butter just made my mouth water. Every now and then I’m struck by what a direct pipeline scents seem to have to our emotions and subconscious, bypassing our thinking selves. The smell of SweeTarts candies brings me right back to the excitement of Halloween night as a child. Scents like vanilla, pumpkin spice, roasting chicken, baking cookies… So many of those powerful smells are about food. What about you? What smells bring back memories or bring you comfort?
For me, doing this Whole30 challenge is also about learning to be intentional about food. Am I actually hungry, or am I just bored, or sad, or acting on habit? 20 days in, and I’ve realized just how much snacking is a habit for me. Watching TV (or going to the movies) just seems to go with a snack. I’m learning to do a quick internal check before eating. Am I hungry? Then go for it. If not, find something else to do.
Last week I picked a couple of new recipes to try and they were a hit! Tomorrow I’ll be sharing how I made these pizza-inspired frittata muffins. I think you and your kids will love them. I know my kids did!
Don’t forget to follow me, Victoria from Creative Home Keeper, Nichole from Casa de Crews, and Krystal from Krystal’s Kitsch as we share our Whole30 journeys with you. We’re using #Whole30BlogChallenge on Instagram and Twitter, and we’d love for you to share with us.
