Baby skin is more delicate, more permeable, and 5 times thinner than an adult’s, which explains why eczema is most common in children. Did you know that almost 1 in 5 children suffers from eczema? Luckily about half will eventually grow out of it, but in the meantime it’s heartbreaking to see your little one in distress from itchy, dry, and cracked skin. What can you do?
Tips for Managing Baby Eczema
- Bathe your baby frequently in lukewarm water and avoid bubble baths and harsh soaps which can be very drying.
- Moisturize often with a high quality, intensive moisturizer formulated to be gentle on sensitive skin and free from fragrances and synthetic ingredients.
- Choose soft natural fabrics like cotton to wear and sleep in.
- Use natural products to wash and care for items and linens.
- Keep your baby’s nails trimmed and smooth to minimize damage from scratching.
- Reduce stress! Try a gentle baby massage using natural oil to help your child relax and feel more comfortable.
- Apply cool compresses for 20-30 minutes to help soothe skin during an eczema flare up.
This new Baby Derma White Mallow line from Weleda is ideal for helping to treat and soothe highly sensitive and eczema-prone skin.
Baby Derma White Mallow
Althaea officinalis (which comes from the Greek word ἄλθειν meaning “to heal”) is commonly referred to as White Mallow or Marshmallow. Weleda uses an extract from the roots that has long been known for its healing properties.
Weleda’s Baby Derma White Mallow face cream and body lotion are dermatologically proven to soothe even the most sensitive skin. These skin-friendly lotions contain organic white mallow, pansy, and other precious plant oils to calm your baby’s irritated skin, strengthen its natural protective barrier, and provide intense hydration. Baby Derma products are free from essential oils, fragrances, synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants, and raw materials derived from mineral oils, so they won’t irritate your baby’s skin. Use them wherever your baby’s skin is dry or itchy.
The Baby Derma line has been awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and is ideal for children of any age with highly sensitive or eczema-prone skin, as well as children with a family history of sensitive skin or eczema.
But don’t think that your child has to have eczema to use these lotions! Kay can get very dry and reddened skin on her cheeks when the weather gets cold, but so far we haven’t had to cope with the challenge of eczema. And for that I consider myself lucky. I received samples of both the White Mallow face cream and body lotion, and I’ve been using them on my girls. I love how gentle and moisturizing they are. They do a good job keeping my girls’ skin soft and protected, and I’ve even been using the lotion myself on my hands.
Weleda Baby Calendula
We also had the opportunity to try out Weleda’s Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash and Diaper Rash Cream. These are formulated with calendula and can be used separately or in combination with Baby Derma. Weleda’s Calendula line uses plant-based essential oils to moisturize and nourish your baby’s skin. Like all Weleda products, they’re free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and colourants.
The shampoo and body wash didn’t dry out Kay or Tee’s skin, and I like that the scent comes from essential oils only. Kay’s been teething lately, which has resulted in some loose stools and redness in her diaper area, so the diaper cream came at a good time. It’s made with 12% zinc oxide, soothing calendula, chamomile, and lavender. It’s considered safe for cloth diapers, but I still used a liner just in case. I really liked the clean chamomile and lavender scent. It went on smoothly, protected Kay’s skin from moisture, and visibly reduced the redness and irritation over the course of a day’s regular use.
A Little Pampering for Mama Too!
We spend almost all of our time and energy on our kids, but mamas need some time for themselves too! Weleda was kind enough to send me a bottle of Sea Buckthorn Body Oil for a little pampering of my own skin. Sea buckthorn berry and seed oil contains antioxidants, essential fatty acids, pro-vitamin A, and vitamin E to help nurture, replenish, and protect skin.
I’ve been using this oil to moisturize after showering, and it also makes a terrific massage oil! I love the fresh, citrusy scent and light feel of this oil. Definitely try this!
