Theatre Under the Stars 2024 Season: CATS and School of Rock

Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) has been a summer tradition here in Vancouver since the 1940s. One of the best things about summer nights in Vancouver is bringing the family to musical performances in the open air amphitheater at Stanley Park. If you haven’t picked up your tickets yet, what are you waiting for?

This summer, two Broadway sensations from musical theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber light up the stage at Stanley Park’s beloved Malkin Bowl. Dream big and live boldly with an electrifying 2024 season featuring CATS and School of Rock, on stage alternating evenings from July 5-August 24, 2024.

TUTS tip: Don’t forget to dress in layers or bring a blanket. It can get chilly when the sun goes down!

CATS

Come one. Come all. It’s time for the Jellicle Ball.

While the moon shines bright up above, all manner of curious cats and feisty felines creep forth for their annual gathering. Each of the Jellicle Tribe are exceptional and astonishing in their own right – but come the dawn, only one can be selected to ascend to the Heaviside Layer.

One of the longest-running and most beloved musicals in Broadway and West End history, CATS is overflowing with unforgettable songs, including “Mr Mistoffelees,” “Macavity: The Mystery Cat,” and, the all-time favourite, “Memory.”

In the natural forest setting of Stanley Park, this open air production breathes fresh new life into the record-breaking musical spectacular and lets the memory live again.

The CATS creative team, led by director Ashley Wright and choreographer Julie Murphy – who both make their TUTS debut – and returning music director Sean Bayntun (The Prom) will bring a fresh new vision to the TUTS stage this summer, featuring a contemporary urban alley setting and characters clothed in highly stylized costumes befitting of their eclectic personalities.

CATS will be in previews on July 5 and 6, opening on July 10, and running on alternating nights until August 24.

School of Rock

Volume up. Curtain up. Class in in session.

Kicked out of his band and facing eviction, life isn’t awesome for wannabe rock star Dewey Finn. But his fortunes change when he intercepts a phone call meant for his roommate – and seizes the opportunity to make some quick cash posing as a substitute teacher.

Finding himself in front of a classroom of straight-laced, uptight private school kids, he realizes he has one lesson he can teach them: How to rock! In order to do so, he’s going to have to avoid the prying eyes of the school’s principal and parents.

Based on the hit 2003 film, School of Rock is a high-voltage, feel-good tribute to big dreams, coming together, and the irrepressible power of rock ‘n roll!
