We’re almost through our very first March break! Only five more days to keep the kids busy with books, games, crafts and activities.
It’s finally spring, and after a LONG, cold winter, I can’t wait for some warm weather and sunshine! What do you think of when you think spring? Flowers of course! Out here on the West Coast we’re already welcoming daffodils and crocuses, but if you don’t have any flowers blooming yet, here’s a simple craft to make some. These tissue paper flowers won’t wilt, and they make a beautiful table centrepiece. This would make a colourful decoration for the Easter dinner table.
This is a simple craft suitable for all ages. Even my 19 month old can help pick which colours she likes, and at four years old, Tee can make the flowers mostly on her own. All you need is some colourful tissue paper and pipe cleaners. We used tissue paper in gorgeous spring colours of yellow, pink, green, lavender, and orange.
Tear your tissue paper into roughly square pieces. Stack the colours you want in your flowers with the larger pieces on the top. Tee loved picking just the right combination of colours to make the “most beautifullest flower”. Don’t worry about stacking them neatly or lining up the corners. The messier it is, the more flower-like it will look.
Grab the middle of the stack of paper making sure to get all the layers. Pinch the middle and twist the paper into a flower shape (with the largest pieces of tissue on the outside).
Fold a pipe cleaner in half and insert the pinched tissue paper in the fold.
Wrap the pipe cleaner around the pinched paper a couple of times then twist the two ends together to make the flower stem. Fluff the paper petals to create your flower.
Make lots of flowers in different colours and sizes, arrange them in a pretty vase, and voila! Spring is here!
