Remembrance Day Poppy Wreath Craft

Here’s a last minute craft project for Remembrance Day! It’s very simple to make using whatever craft supplies you might have on hand and a glue gun. I used a paper plate for the base and scrounged up various red papers and scrap materials around the house. I used felt, glitter paper, craft foam, and other scrap papers I found.

Start by cutting out the centre of the plate and the flanged edges leaving just a paper ring. This will be the base for your wreath. Don’t worry about it being cut perfectly because you won’t see it in the finished craft.

Trace and cut out your poppy shapes using a nice mix of fabrics and papers. You can either cut out your own or use this template. I used large and small poppies for variation which looked really nice.

Next, make the centres for your flowers. I used black felt and just cut out circles free hand. Glue a felt circle into the middle of each flower.

Now you can start playing around with your poppies to create the look of the wreath you want. Start with the big flowers on the bottom then use the small ones to fill in the gaps.

Once it looks right, hot glue everything down and add a ribbon loop in the back so you can hang your wreath.

And here’s the finished wreath!

As we were hanging it up on Tee’s bedroom door, she asked why we had used poppies. So that lead to us reading In Flanders Fields together and then to a valuable discussion about the meaning of Remembrance Day and why we celebrate it every year.
