Parent’s Guide to Buying a Violin

“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything.” –Plato

Fostering an appreciation for music is vital to raising happy and well-rounded children. Did you know that musical education can help improve children’s language abilities, attention span, empathy for others, and self-confidence? Wow! Who wouldn’t want that for their kids?

When you’re considering music lessons for your child, the two of you need to decide on an instrument first. Popular choices include piano, guitar, drums, and the violin. The violin is a great instrument to start with because it’s fairly easy to learn and comes in different sizes for even little hands. Experts recommend starting violin lessons between four and seven, but children (and adults) can start at any age!

If you’re in the market for a first violin, you may feel a bit out of your depth though. A quality instrument is an investment, so you want to be educated before you buy. What materials should you look for? What size should you choose? How much should you expect to pay? What accessories will you need? Should you shop online or in store?

Fortunately, I have this useful infographic from Fiddlershop with all the info you need to pick the perfect violin for your future Paganini or Vivaldi!

  • Thankfully I never had to buy a violin, I’m not musical at all – I have no love for music, I never have music on in my car nor at home, nowhere. I find it very distracting too. Strange really as I have two cousins who play the violin, one was even a music teacher and plays in orchestras too. Oh and I speak 3 languages (or used to).
