Cloth Diapering Giveaways Greener Living

Omaïki Oriön Nighttime Fitted Diaper Review

Riley is sleeping through the night! Okay, not 100% of the time. Alright, not even a majority of the time. But maybe two or three nights a week. And after 21 months of sleep deprivation, it’s pure bliss.

She’s always been a heavy wetter, though, so keeping her dry and comfortable throughout the night is essential for all of us to get more rest. For cloth diapering families, fitted diapers are key for nighttime absorbency. Saturated diapers weren’t an issue with my first child, so when I saw other parents swearing by their fitteds, I didn’t understand what the big deal was.

Now I totally get it. My sleep and sanity depend on finding the holy grail of fitteds, and over the last month I’ve been loving Omaïki’s new Oriön Nighttime Fitted Diaper. And I’ve got the well-rested, new outlook on life to prove it!

Anatomy of an Oriön Fitted Diaper

The Oriön nighttime diapering set comes with a fitted diaper and an extra insert for even more absorbency. Both are constructed of a bamboo sherpa, bamboo viscose, organic cotton, poly blend with a polyester stay-dry lining on one side. The natural fibers are highly absorbent, and the polyester wicks moisture away from your child instantly for added comfort and protection against skin irritation and rashes. This is really the perfect combination, in my opinion. I love the bamboo sherpa. There’s just something about a fluffy, fleecy diaper that feels right. But my kids have also been extra sensitive to wetness, so that stay-dry lining makes all the difference.

It has four rise settings, and the snaps are very secure. It can be really irritating when you’re trying to put a diaper on a wiggly baby, and the rise snaps keep coming undone. Thankfully, these ones stay in place. The hip snaps are also very generously sized with one row of five snaps on each side plus two crossover snaps for newborns.

The insert is 25.5 inches long. That was intimidating at first, until I realized how convenient and versatile it is. No hunting for multiple inserts or snapping anything together. You just fold it in half or in thirds and choose which side—stay-dry or natural fibers—you want against your baby’s skin. I like to do a Z fold in ours to add extra absorbency right in the middle where Riley needs it most at night.

Remember that fitted diapers are not waterproof on their own. They must have a cover over the top. We use one of Omaïki’s in their spunky orange shade called Mango.

Fit and Performance

The Oriön is said to fit children from 8-35 lbs. Riley is on the slender side, weighing 21 lbs at 21 months. It fits her really well on the small rise setting, and she still has two hip snaps left on either side, so there’s plenty of room to grow. She’ll easily be able to use this diaper until potty training.

This diaper is very roomy, especially without the insert, but the elastics are snug around her back and legs, and with the cover on, the diaper seems to sit close enough to her skin that we haven’t had any leaking issues caused by a baggy fit.

I haven’t tried the Oriön with any other cover, so I can’t say how well it fits inside other brands, but it lays perfectly inside the Omaïki cover. All the material is easily tucked inside, and Riley hasn’t had any issues with gapping around her legs. It’s a great combination.

After several washes, this diaper is at peak absorbency. We’ve used it with and without the insert, and it has lasted through Riley’s typical 11 hour nights with no leaks.

Final Thoughts

It’s always hard to remember how tiny new babies can be once you’re no longer in the newborn phase, but judging by the snap adjustments, I’d say the waist and legs of the Oriön do get small enough to fit an 8 lb baby. Because it’s engineered to fit all the way to potty training, however, it would also be quite bulky on a newborn. Something to keep in mind if you want to cloth diaper from day one.

One thing that consistently stands out to me with Omaïki diapers is their lightweight feel. For how absorbent they are, they don’t seem the least bit bulky. Their bamboo organic cotton blend stays light and airy even after multiple washes. It also seems to resist staining.

This diaper washes well and dries in one cycle, which is uncommon for fitted diapers. For some of the more absorbent inserts and fitteds in my stash, I either have to run a second dryer cycle or set them out for a few hours to finish drying before I’m able to fold them along with the rest of my diaper laundry. This usually leads to me putting off folding for a long period of time. Before you know it, I have a basket of diapers that’s been sitting for two days. I know I’m not the only one.

If you’ve got a child who soaks through diapers at night, or you just want to see what all the hype about fitted diapers is, you may want to incorporate the made in Canada Oriön Nighttime Fitted Diaper into your stash. It’ll fit your little one for years, wick wetness away all night, and allow you to customize the absorbency based on your baby’s changing nighttime needs.
