Lately I’ve been getting more interested in fitted diapers. As Kay approaches potty training, I’m starting to shift my focus to nighttime diapering. I love fitted diapers for overnights because the entire diaper absorbs, making it a great solution for keeping baby comfortable and leak-free all night. Omaïki recently updated their fitted diaper with cute flannel prints and extra absorbency, and last summer I gave a very positive review of the Omaïki 3.Ö Hybrid diaper, so I was looking forward to trying Omaïki’s fitted diaper option.
I’ve partnered again with Canadian online natural mom, baby, and family boutique Gentle Nest to bring you this review (and a giveaway!) of Omaïki’s new Ö Sleep Bamboo Fitted Diaper.
Anatomy of an Omaïki Ö Sleep Bamboo Fitted Diaper
The Ö Sleep Diaper is a one size fitted diaper designed specifically for night time. It comes in snaps (and Aplix by special request). The Ö Sleep has two rows of eight waist snaps and two snaps on each wing to adjust the size at the waist and leg. This diaper has crossover snaps, and like all Omaïki diapers, the waist snaps are angled to allow a more contoured fit.
The outside is soft flannel, and the inside layer is a polyester stay-dry mesh lining. The absorbent core is made from multiple layers of bamboo viscose for premium absorbency. The biggest change from their older style of fitted diaper is it is no longer a pocket. Instead it comes standard with a tongue-style insert sewn in at one end and a snap-in, removable booster. Like all fitted diapers, it requires a cover to make it waterproof.
This diaper is adjustable to fit babies 8-35 pounds using one row of rise snaps. Here’s how the sizes compare. Notice there are only two rise heights.
Anatomy of an Omaïki One Size Diaper Cover
I also received the Omaïki One Size Diaper Cover in a similar but not identical bird print, made from thick, high-quality waterproof PUL. Like the fitted diaper it comes standard in snaps and special order Aplix. The cover has two rows of eight waist snaps, two snaps on each wing, and crossover snaps. The most noticeable feature is the generous PUL gussets on this cover. Elastics at the tummy as well as the back help stop the diaper underneath from wicking.
The cover is recommended for babies 8-35 pounds. Three rows of snaps provide a three-step rise adjustment.
Fit and Performance
The first thing to remember is that like all natural fiber diapers, the Ö Sleep will need to be washed and dried at least four to five times before using. At 32 pounds, 33 months, and almost 34″ tall, I expected Kay to be at the upper end of the size range, but unfortunately the diaper is simply too small for her. You can see here that the rise is too low; it sits on her like a bikini. I know it was uncomfortable for her as she kept trying to pull it up.
The Omaïki cover is very roomy in the bum with lots of space for extra inserts and absorbency as needed. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the waist. I had the cover on the outermost snaps, and it was still too tight. You can see how it’s pulling across the back and cutting in a bit.
I was curious how the updated Omaïki fitted I reviewed compares to the older-style pocket fitted diaper. I don’t have that one, but Melanie at Gentle Nest was kind enough to provide this comparison picture. It’s clear that the new version is a fair bit smaller.
Moving past the sizing, there are lots of things I like about this diaper. To start with, fitted diapers are notorious for long dry times. Many of my fitted diapers need two cycles in my dryer to get completely dry, but thanks to the separate insert and snap-in booster, the Ö Sleep dries quickly in the same time as my inserts.
I like the mesh stay-dry lining. In comparison to the more usual microfleece lining, poop seems to stick less to this material. I also appreciate that all Omaïki snap in inserts & boosters are interchangeable between all their diapers – it’s just simpler and easier that way.
Final Thoughts
I’m very sad that the Omaïki Ö Sleep diaper and cover don’t fit my baby as I really like the features on both. Of course all babies are different and the suggested weight ranges are just suggestions, but when I have numerous other diapers to compare this one too, I can safely say it fits smaller than the average one size diaper. The suggested range up to 35 pounds seems unrealistic to me. While this diaper and cover don’t work for my older toddler, I think this set would be a good option for smaller/younger babies because of the shorter dry time, adjustable absorbency, and gussets in the cover.
