Cloth Diapering Giveaways

9 New Baby Gift Ideas

Is there anything more exciting than a new baby? Absolutely not!

Having done the newborn baby thing twice, I was so grateful for the gifts that family and friends brought, both at my baby shower and after the baby was born. Can you guess what else I was grateful for? The gifts of food and time! Thank goodness for those thoughtful friends who brought precooked or frozen meals (don’t forget to check for allergies!) along with that cute teddy bear, or who offered to watch the baby while I got my first shower for the week.

Everybody loves celebrating baby’s arrival with a gift! Whether for a baby shower or just a welcome to the world present, I’ve teamed up with Go Green Baby, a baby boutique based in Kingston, Ontario, to bring you our favourite new baby gift ideas, next to dinner and a nap of course!

Cloth Diapers

More and more families are cloth diapering these days. With a growing appreciation for the environmental, health, and money saving benefits of using cloth, it’s no longer unusual to see cloth diapers on a baby shower wish list. The AMP One Size Duo pocket diaper ($20-21) is a popular choice because of its ease of use and laundering and wide range of adorable colours and prints. Plus AMP is made in Canada!AMP OS diapers

Other popular made in Canada cloth diaper brands include AppleCheeks and Bummis. My own diaper stash contained all three of these brands, and I never hesitate to recommend them.

Baby Carrier

As far as I’m concerned, a stretchy wrap like this Moby Wrap ($75) is a must have for any new mom. Wraps are perfectly adjustable for petite up to plus size mamas, and they’re fantastic for hands free carrying, promoting skin-to-skin contact, and reducing crying. And when mama’s up all night with a colicky baby, a Moby Wrap will help her comfort baby without tiring out her back and arms.

Tula Baby Carriers are also tremendously popular both for their versatility and beautiful prints. These dad-friendly soft structured carriers go on easily with adjustable straps and buckles, and they can be used right into toddlerhood.

Padraig Slippers

Every Canadian baby needs a pair of handmade Padraig Slippers ($30+). These highly sought after crocheted wool slippers are the height of luxury. Each pair is made with an extra soft sheepskin lining and leather soles.

Natural Wood Teethers & Toys

Many families try to avoid possible toxins and contaminants by giving locally made, natural wood teethers and toys. Go Green Baby has their own line of Re-Wood Toys teethers, rattles, and toys (starting at $6). Natalie’s husband Jamin hand makes each item giving otherwise unusable locally sourced hard woods new life as a non-toxic teether or wonderful heirloom toy.Re-Wood Teethers and Toys

Muslin Swaddling Blankets

Swaddling blankets are a classic baby shower gift because they’re so versatile! Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddling Blankets ($50) are a twist on this old classic made from soft, luxurious rayon from bamboo. This lightweight and breathable muslin is ideal for swaddling, but the blankets can also be used as burp cloths, nursing and stroller covers, portable crib sheets, stroller and car seat liners, tummy time blankets, change table covers, and more. Older kids love playing with these too – here comes Super Big Sister with her cape!

Baby Safe Stuffed Toy

Every baby needs a teddy bear! Cuddle Bears are made from 100% sheepskin, baby safe eyes and nose, and a securely attached velvet ribbon. Wool is breathable, flame retardant, hypoallergenic, and natural resistant to dirt, smells, and bacteria, making this an excellent first bear for baby.

Eco-Friendly Bedding

A soft, interlock knit Bamboobino fitted sheet is a great choice for babies with environmental allergies or sensitive skin. The rayon from bamboo fiber is Oeko-Tex 100 certified and made from OCIA & USDA-certified organically grown bamboo.

Nursing Bra

Don’t forget mom! A good nursing bra is vital to support the life-giving work the girls are doing. I used Bravado Body Silk Seamless nursing bras ($50) throughout most of my own nursing career. They’re supremely comfortable even while sleeping, and the one-handed clips make breastfeeding access so easy. After all, moms need every little bit of support they can get!

Convertible Crib

Finally, if you’re considering a big ticket item or going in with a group of friends, check out Oeuf’s modern, eco-friendly furniture line. The Oeuf Sparrow Crib ($995) has a non toxic, water-based finish free of VOC health hazards, and once outgrown, the crib can be converted into a toddler bed.
