My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: The Keys of Friendship DVD Review

MLP Keys of FriendshipPonies make the best friends! My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: The Keys Of Friendship was just released on DVD in the U.S. and Canada from Shout! Factory Kids in collaboration with Hasbro Studios. The DVD includes five episodes from Season 4: “Rarity Takes Manhattan,” “Pinkie Apple Pie,” “It Ain’t Easy Being Breezies,” “Twilight’s Kingdom, Part 1,” and “Twilight’s Kingdom, Part 2.” plus a bonus sing along song “Generosity” with subtitles.

“Since her arrival in Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle has discovered the true meaning and value of friendship. With her very best friends — Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy and, of course, Spike — Twilight goes on the greatest of adventures and comes back with even more lessons. All of this has earned Twilight her wings and the crown of a Princess and now you can learn what Princess Twilight Sparkle has learned and take with you the Keys Of Friendship.”

There’s just something about My Little Pony that seems to fascinate little girls. I remember desperately wanting ALL THE PONIES when I was about 6 or 7. (I only ever got the knock off ponies though – boo.) Ever since Tee discovered My Little Pony on Netflix a few months ago, she and her little sister have been crazy for MLP! Kay started chanting “po-nee, po-nee, po-nee” as soon as she saw Twilight Sparkle on the cover. Tee watched all the episodes from beginning to end, and Kay lasted through the first episode and half of the second before wandering away (hey, she’s not quite two yet). They’ve already asked to watch it again, and Tee really enjoys the “Generosity” sing along bonus feature.

Even thought they’re still pretty young, I don’t mind my girls watching My Little Pony. Maybe I wouldn’t watch it on my own, but there are lots of far less watchable cartoons out there. And afterwards we’ve had some really valuable conversations about what it means to be a friend, the value of loyalty and honesty, and even why forgiveness is important. Big stuff for a children’s cartoon!

One word of caution: I don’t let Kay watch the “Twilight’s Kingdom” episodes. The villain, Tirek, is too scary for her. My four-year-old is fine with it though, and Kay enjoys the other episodes.
