“Go back to where the fun began! You’re invited to return to Ponyland, the home of all your favorite classic Little Ponies, including the Earth Ponies, Unicorns, Pegasus Ponies, Flutter Ponies, Sea Ponies, Baby Sea Ponies, their human friends Megan, Danny and Molly and, of course, their dragon friend, Spike! Together, they live a life of games, songs and harmony with allies like the Bushwoolies and Furbobs. But, occasionally, there are problems in Ponyland and the Little Ponies of Paradise Estate must face evil witches, goblins, Stone Backs, Grundles and more! Now you can come join in the fun and adventure with My Little Pony: The Complete Series!”

This is nostalgia in a box. When I pressed play and the old theme song came on, “My Little Pony, My Little Pony, What will today’s adventure be?” I couldn’t help but hum along. This is the My Little Pony I remember watching on Saturday mornings as a kid. The animation and sound quality are what you would expect in a children’s cartoon from the 80s, before the magic of CG, but after the first few minutes I stopped noticing that and just watched the stories.

Here’s a clip from “The Would Be Dragon Slayer” (Season 1, Episode 40). Poor Spike! And that’s one heck of a frilly pair of overalls!

I enjoyed these original My Little Pony episodes, but my four-year-old daughter was not quite as interested in them as I had hoped. She loves watching the new My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series, and I think she didn’t like the old school look and feel of these cartoons as much as the ones she’s used to. I’ll keep this for when she’s a little older and can more appreciate the retro appeal of these classic episodes.
