My Children’s Father: A Photo Essay on Fatherhood

You don’t babysit. You parent, and you would be pretty pissed off if anyone ever called it “babysitting.” You love your daughters unconditionally, and you make sure they know it. You believe that they can do anything they put their minds to.

You go to work every day, commuting over an hour each way, to take care of us. Every night when they hear your key in the door, the girls jump up and race for the door shouting, “Daddy! Daddy!” No matter how tired you are, you always have a hug and a kiss for both of them, and for me.

You take them to the park and push them on the swings. You’re an expert at This Little Piggy for fingers and toes, and you give the best horsey rides.

You teach them how to pedal their bikes.

You ride in ridiculously small trains so the baby gets to ride too.

You share your hobbies and interests, with no silly hangups about “boy hobbies” or “girl hobbies.”

You’re not just fun-and-games-daddy though. You take them grocery shopping with you. You teach them the names of the planets in order. You show them how to peel carrots, cut veggies, and crack eggs (and then you fish the shells out of the omelet). You read to them every night, and snuggle with them when they have nightmares.

You patiently listen to them tell you the same story over and over again. You give baths, make school lunches, brush teeth, and change diapers. You cheer when they first start using the potty, and you don’t cave in to the multiple candy requests a day.

You teach them to be kind and compassionate. You role model how husbands should treat their wives.

You put your family first in everything you do, and nothing makes you happier than being a dad.

We love you. Take it easy today. You deserve it.

  • My husband doesn’t like to be in photos and I’m worried that we won’t have enough of him and baby. I’ll have to try get some beautiful candid ones this summer, like the lead one on this post. 🙂

  • This is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful husband and father. It is so special to see a husband and father appreciated instead of the way we often see them portrayed on TV. They are laughed at, put down and sometimes treated as less than human. Let’s have TV shows that portray the majority of fathers and husbands-as the wonderful fathers and husbands they are-who would do anything to keep their family safe and happy.
My husband and father of our children worked hard all his life to give us a good living, and he still helps out when he can. He is a truly good man, like your husband and we should all celebrate them.
