My Birthday, My Way, at My Gym

As Kay’s birthday was approaching last month, I realized we were marking a major milestone. My itty bitty baby girl was somehow turning five years old!

I wanted an extra special birthday for her, and for that we turned to the party specialists at My Gym in Langley, BC. You may remember they also hosted Tee’s fifth birthday a couple of years ago. Tee and her friends had so much fun at her My Gym party, we knew that Kay and all of her little school friends would love it too.

I have to start by thanking the staff Amanda and Airley who made sure our birthday girl was celebrated and all the kids were part of the fun, even the distractible boys who kept wandering off in the middle of everything. Wrangling 12 kids between four and six years of age is a Herculean task, but the staff did it with ease and made it look like fun.

The kids had a blast dancing around, tumbling on the soft floor, scaling the climbing wall, jumping on the trampoline, and catching bubbles (I may have even caught a few myself). With the staff in charge of everything, all the parents had to do was sit back, take pictures, and relax.

The staff did a fabulous job at reading the room and keeping the kids engaged the whole time. Structured games were liberally interspersed with free play, and the highlight of it all was the zip line. The birthday girl got TWO turns!

We had about an hour of playtime which was just right for our little guests. (There’s also an option to extend the party another half hour for an additional charge.) We wrapped up our playtime with an enthusiastic rendition of the “Happy Birthday” song and a birthday parade which Kay led around the gym in the birthday wagon. Little sister was thrilled to be the centre of attention, as you can see from her smile!

While we were wrapping up the play portion of our party, the staff had already set up the upstairs party room with balloons, tablecloths, plates, plastic cutlery, and little cups. (They were very little cups. It would be best to bring your own for older kids). The staff served the food, poured the juice, served the cake – they did everything!

Speaking of cake, ours was inspired by the Robert Munsch’s classic picture book The Paper Bag Princess and made with love by Kristy at The Cowardly Lemon Bakery. Isn’t that hand sculpted dragon amazing? And Princess Elizabeth’s singed crown on top!

After that came the best part of the whole thing. We handed out balloons and an adorable 3″x3″ miniature Paper Bag Princess book to each guest, and then we said good bye. There were no dishes to do, no sweeping up ground-in cake crumbs, no tidying. Just a friendly wave and off we went! Having someone else take care of everything so I could just enjoy the time with my brand new five-year-old was truly priceless.
