Kowalli Baby Carrier Cover Review #HolidayGiftGuide

2013 Holiday Gift Guide

We had a cold snap in Vancouver last week. Really cold. I know, I know, people everywhere else in Canada are probably laughing at us wimpy West Coasters, but it was cold for us. It went down to -10 degrees Celsius, and then we had our first snowfall! As I’ve mentioned before, we walk to school, rain or shine or snow. It’s hard for either me or Kay to wear a big puffy jacket in a baby carrier, so I’ve just been wrapping my sweater coat around the two of us. It’s kind of awkward though, and it just doesn’t cut it in below zero weather. So it was really good timing when this Kowalli baby carrier cover arrived at my door just a few days before the cold weather hit.

The Kowalli baby carrier cover works with every wrap, sling, and soft-structured carrier. A definite must-have for babywearing parents! #HolidayGiftGuide

So what’s a Kowalli? It’s a babywearing carrier cover that fits over any brand of baby carrier, sling, or wrap to keep you and baby cozy, warm, and dry. The Kowalli is made from top-quality Oeko-Tex 100 certified Polartec fleece fabric that protects you and baby from the wind, rain, and cold temperatures as low as 15º F (-10º C). The fleece that Kowalli uses is Durable Water Repellant (DWR) treated which means that water beads up on it when wet. It’s also machine washable, engineered to resist pilling, and resists rips and tears.

Just slip the Kowalli on over you, your carrier, and your baby. Adjust the elastics at the top and the bottom using the one-handed pull tabs, and go. Both you and baby stay warm and snug, ready for any weather. The fleece keeps Kay warm and dry in light rain or snow, a must here on the wet West Coast!

As any babywearing mama will tell you, one of the few annoying things about babywearing is the way that pants ride up exposing baby’s legs to sun, rain, wind, and cold. Even with her socks pulled up and leggings a size larger, I’m still constantly adjusting Kay’s pants to protect her ankles from the cold. I LOVE the elastic on the bottom of the Kowalli that keeps the cover pulled down and tucked under her feet. You can see here in my pictures how Kay’s legs and feet are completely protected.

Don’t worry, these pictures were taken just before the cold snap, so nobody was frozen in the making of this review post. When the temperature dropped, Kay wore a fleece jacket in her carrier, and I wore my coat under the Kowalli. There was more than enough room for all the layers, and everybody was nice and toasty on our walks to and from school.

No matter how hard I try, Kay will not keep her mittens on, and I worry about her hands getting too cold. When we’re wearing our Kowalli, she can pull her hands out whenever she pleases, but it’s easy to keep her hands tucked inside and warm the rest of the time. The kangaroo pocket on the front is a nice little extra to keep my hands warm too!

The Kowalli is worn over the right shoulder like a toga, and I’ve noticed this side rides up a bit. The only thing I wish I could change would be to make the right side a little longer so the bottom hem sits more even with the left. Despite this small annoyance, I’m in love with my Kowalli, and I wish I had gotten one three years ago when I was wearing Tee that first winter. Any babywearing family would love to find one of these under the tree this year!
