Kindera: A New Way to Protect Your Kids Online

So you bought a tablet or laptop for Christmas. Now what? Are you concerned about how much time your kids will be spending in front of that screen and what they’ll be doing (or not doing!) while they’re there?

If you’re like most parents, you probably have concerns around your kids accessing inappropriate content, or being online when they should be doing their homework or going to sleep. Until now, your options have been software-based which require complicated installations on every single device you want to monitor and can still be worked around by tech-savvy kids.

My girls are only three and five, so I used to think I had plenty of time before I had to worry about this. Then a little while ago, Tee ran across a less than appropriate video while watching toy unboxing videos on YouTube. I was sitting right next to her so I was able to turn it off before she saw anything I didn’t want her to, but it was a wake up call to me. I took the YouTube app off my tablet, but it also made me realize just how easy it is for kids to stumble onto inappropriate content.

The Kindera monitoring system protects, teaches, and supports your kids as they transition from children, to teenagers, and eventually into young adults.

A few weeks ago I had a fascinating conversation with Antoine Boucher, a Canadian dad of three and former engineer at Research in Motion. When he discovered his own child looking at questionable content online, he decided he needed a solution that was more than just a “blocker”. Like most of us, he wanted to protect his kids, but he also knew that guiding and mentoring his kids to develop into discerning and prudent internet users was of much more value than arbitrarily blocking websites.

After an exhaustive search, Antoine realized that what he wanted just didn’t exist. So being a problem-solver and innovator, he decided to create it himself. Meet Kindera!

PROTECT your children.

►Did you know that 74% of teens rely on their parents or other adults for information about protecting themselves online?

Use the simple Kindera interface on your mobile to monitor and supervise your child’s online activities on an ongoing basis. You’ll receive an email alert if your child is putting their safety at risk online, or viewing sites you do not approve of. The Kindera Home Service subscription automatically updates and adapts as content changes to provide up to date safety filters for your family.

TEACH your children how to manage online distractions.

►Did you know that children and teenagers alike should have less than 2 hours of screen time a day outside of doing homework?

Sit down as a family and discuss when internet access is needed through the day. Factors to consider include school schedules, homework loads, bed times, and entertainment needs. With Kindera’s access scheduling system, you can create rules for when they can have internet access and for how long. If necessary, you can shut off access, or turn it back on, for anyone in your family with the click of a button.

SUPPORT your children as they transition into young adults.

Did you know that 90% of adolescents, aged 8 to 17 years old, believe it’s okay for parents to set rules on how they use their mobile devices?

Kindera allows you to create individualized profiles for each child and adjust restrictions as they transition into young adults. You can allow or block or schedule access to popular apps like Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, Clash of Clans, or any other destination. Set general content restrictions based on your child’s age (e.g., G, PG, PG-14) to automatically manage access to age-appropriate sites, and easily adjust your children’s content access rating as personal, educational, and entertainment needs change.

Visit Kindera to learn more and connect on Facebook and Twitter.

Kindera retails for $199.99 and is available to purchase online. For a limited time, you’ll receive one year of free home service (regularly $10 a month) with your purchase!

  • I really like how it has a timer, I need this with my three year old. Sometimes when I think he’s in his room playing with his toys, he’s on YouTube watching dinosaurs.

Safety is really important to me as well. I’ll be showing my husband this tonight.

    Thanks.

  • I am waiting to receive this in the mail anytime now and I am so excited to try it! Little ones can access unfriendly content so easily nowadays! Best to be prepared.

  • This is really familiar to me. I have heard of to somewhere already I think. I need to add something to my daughter’s iPod or my other daughter’s iPad and phone. It’s hard to be on top of it all the time but I monitor their sites like crazy because honestly teenagers and tweens are on those things ALL. The. Time. So maybe this is the one for us.

  • Wow this sounds amazing!! I have two boys (8 & 10) and I constantly worry whether they are on a safe site or not. I also LOVE the timer function. My boys get so lost in their games they promise to only play awhile but get so caught up time flies by! I hope it’s not too late to ask Santa for one!!

  • You’re SO right. It is never too early to get on this right away! I can just imagine how much you freaked out that moment when you caught sight of what appeared on Youtube while your little one was watching. Such an eye opener! This sounds like a great service for all families.
