The Importance of Healthy Smiles and #HealthyRoutines

What’s the first thing you notice about someone when you meet them? For me, it’s their smile. A smile crosses language and cultural barriers and invites a friendly response. When I see someone smiling, I can’t help but smile back!

A healthy smile is a beautiful smile!

A healthy smile is a beautiful smile! But it’s not just your teeth. Did you know that dental health impacts your overall health? Poor dental care can lead to an overgrowth of oral bacteria which has been linked to cardiovascular disease and endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of your heart). For pregnant mamas, periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

I take my family to see the dentist every six months, but it’s just as important to take care of our teeth in between visits. Having a healthy routine is important to good dental health and a healthy smile. I’ve been using a brand new two-step dental care system for the last couple of weeks, and it gives me teeth that feel like I’ve just left my dentist’s office.

Crest Pro-Health HD kit

Crest Pro-Health HD is an innovative two-step system for oral health. It comes in a case with two tubes. Step 1 is a fluoride toothpaste to clean away plaque and help reverse gingivitis. Step 2 is a polishing and whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide. It’s a little bit different than the typical brushing routine we’re used to, but after just a day or two it was easy to get into a new routine. It’s the same length of brushing that you would normally do, just split up between two steps.

I start by flossing as usual, then brush my teeth with the Step 1 toothpaste for one minute. The fluoride toothpaste has a mild minty taste and minimal foaming which I quite like. I use Step 1 to brush my tongue too – don’t forget this important step in your oral hygiene routine! When I’m done, I spit but DON’T RINSE.

Next I brush for one minute with the non-foaming Step 2 clear whitening gel. I was concerned that the hydrogen peroxide would make it taste bad, but it really doesn’t. It has a very mild, slightly minty, vaguely sweet taste. Not bad at all. When I’m done I spit and rinse as usual. That’s it!

Crest Pro-Health HD Step 2

After only one use, my teeth felt extra clean and smooth just like after a visit to the dentist. Having a two-step process may be a tiny amount of extra work, but isolating the ingredients allows each product to do its job to the best of its ability so I don’t have to choose between a healthy smile and a whiter smile!

A healthy smile is a beautiful smile!

But what about sensitive teeth? That’s me! Whenever I’ve tried those whitening strips in the past I’ve ended up with aching teeth. The Crest Pro-Health HD instructions recommend using it twice a day, but I’ve been using it at night only. With this modified routine I haven’t noticed any tooth pain, and I’m still reaping the benefits.
