How to Party Like a Princess!

My sweet little Kay just turned four. Wow! Just writing that down seems crazy. It seems like only yesterday I held her in my arms for the first time. How the time has flown by! We had a wonderful birthday party with some special friends to celebrate this milestone, and I need to tell you all about it!

I don’t think it’s a secret that my favourite birthday parties are the ones I don’t have to plan, provide entertainment for, or clean up after. This year we celebrated Kay’s fourth birthday at our local The Little Gym. With locations all across Canada and the US (and 31 other countries!), The Little Gym is the world’s premier experiential learning and physical development center for children. Their structured classes and positive learning environment are the perfect space for kids to try new things and build their self-confidence. They don’t just do gym classes though, they also do amazingly fun birthday parties!

The Little Gym of Langley offers special princess parties in partnership with As You Wish Princess Parties. That meant we had an extra special guest drop by. Kay (and her sister) were over the moon to find Princess Rapunzel waiting to greet her! Our guests were a bit late to the party, so Tee and Kay had some extra one on one time with Princess Rapunzel, and they still can’t stop talking about it.

I can’t say enough good things about Princess Rapunzel (AKA Alyssa Nielsen). She stayed in perfect character the entire time and utterly convinced the girls she was the real deal. Princess Rapunzel dazzled the kids with a story, singalong, and a beautiful rendition of “I See the Light”.

She even gave Kay her own tiara and special bracelet and crowned her Princess Kay for the day.

After Princess Rapunzel had to run to another royal engagement, The Little Gym staff took over and got the party going with some upbeat music and active play. The kids enjoyed the next hour full of free play time alternating with staff-led games.

We had a broad age range of kids at the birthday, from two to eleven. The staff learned every child’s name and helped the younger kids navigate the equipment safely.

All our friends had a wonderful time!

But everyone’s favourite equipment was the inflatable tumbling mat. I secretly wish I could have taken a turn on there too!

After an hour of playtime, we moved upstairs to the party room where we discovered this beautifully decorated table set with colour coordinated reusable dishes and flowers.

If you have specific balloons, themed tableware, and/or decorations in mind, just bring them in ahead of time and the staff will blow up the balloons and set up your decor for you so it’s all ready when you arrive for the party.

The kids enjoyed pizza, chips, and iced tea while staff stuck around to keep everything running smoothly. We realized we’d forgotten the candles and serving knife for the cake, but The Little Gym saved the day with their own supplies.

Speaking of cake, Kristy from The Cowardly Lemon is the most amazing cake artist in town, and she made this incredible replica of Rapunzel’s tower for Kay’s special day.

You need to see the details to truly appreciate the artistry involved, so here’s a close up of the tower with Rapunzel and Pascal inside.

The kids (and parents) were completely blown away!

The Little Gym staff kept us on schedule and at the end of the party handed out a goody bag (provided by us) and a helium balloon (provided by The Little Gym) to each child on their way out. All we had to do was say thank you and go home to a clean house and happy children.

The birthday girl and her guests had a great time with Amy, Shelby, and Hayley. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to leave everything in their capable hands and just spend my time with the kids. And I have to say it again – no clean up! The staff were warm, friendly, approachable, and did a fantastic job of leading the kids in the perfect balance of structured activities and free play. Princess Rapunzel’s appearance and our beautiful cake made an already great party into something even more amazing.

Thank you to The Little Gym of Langley, As You Wish Princess, and The Cowardly Lemon for making Kay’s fourth birthday extraordinary! I wholeheartedly recommend everyone involved in our special day. You simply can’t go wrong with any of these talented folks for your next birthday or special occasion.

  • Wow! That cake!
Such a great idea for a birthday! My daughter’s 5th birthday is coming up in November and I would much rather do a party like this than host it at my house. How long does Rapunzel stay?

  • It looks like you had a great party and that cake is amazing. I am going to suggest this idea to a friend for whom this could be just the thing.
