Last fall when we were flying home from our family vacation in the Dominican Republic, we had a longish layover at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. All of us, kids and adults included, were overtired, hungry, and all kinds of cranky. I prowled up and down the airport concourse looking for anything that seemed appetizing before finally settling on some fast food Chinese and two big containers of strawberry frozen yogurt. The Chinese food was meh at best, but I swear that was the best frozen yogurt I’d ever had. Until now that is.
A few days ago I was struck with a craving for some of that frozen yogurt. We didn’t have any in the house, and I really didn’t want to drive from store to store hunting for just the right thing to satisfy that craving. So I made my own!
I used strawberries for this, but then I had the genius idea to add some lime juice and lime zest to the mix. I ended up with something that tastes like my favourite margarita – the perfect blend of sweet and refreshingly tart!
After tasting this homemade frozen yogurt, I don’t think I’ll ever feel the need to buy ready made frozen yogurt again. I’ve made this strawberry lime frozen yogurt recipe three times in the last week already, and it’s a huge hit with everyone in the family! I love that I control how sweet it is, and with only four ingredients, this beats anything I can buy in the store for both nutritional profile and taste.
If you have a bag of frozen strawberries in the freezer, you’re three steps ahead already. Fresh strawberries will work just fine too, but you’ll need to wash, hull, and freeze them before using.
Thankfully you don’t need an ice cream maker for this one. I still don’t have an ice cream machine, but I do have a food processor which is perfect for blending all the ingredients together into a smooth, creamy, and refreshing dessert in no time flat.
You can eat this strawberry lime frozen yogurt straight out of the food processor, or for a firmer texture, pop it into the freezer for a couple of hours. If you’re really self-disciplined, there might even be some left over, in which case you can store it in an airtight container in your freezer. The sugar in the honey keeps the yogurt from freezing into ice, but it will get really solid overnight. Just leave it out on the counter for 10 minutes or so, and it will be scoopable again.
This was so easy to make, I foresee a lot of experimentation in the future coming up with other fun flavours. Leave me your best flavour ideas in the comments!
