The Hero of Color City Blu-ray Review

The Hero of Color City

Each night, when Ben falls asleep, his Crayons’ magical Crayon Box transports them to Color City, a world of dazzling hues, soaring fantasy, and the whimsy of childhood.

When timid Yellow is accidentally left behind in Ben’s room, she inadvertently awakens two Unfinished Drawings: King Scrawl, a huge, mute monster, and Gnat, Scrawl’s overactive sidekick. They follow Yellow to Color City and claim the enchanted Rainbow Waterfall and all of its color for themselves. Soon Color City will fade and our lovable crayon characters will disappear.

It’s up to Yellow and her pals, Blue, Green, Red, and the twins, Black and White, to save the day. Meeting with fantastical creatures and fun adventures along the way, Yellow discovers she has more courage and strength than she knew and learns to believe in herself and to count on the support of her friends.

I’d never actually heard of this movie before we watched it for the first time, which is surprising considering all the well-known actors voicing characters in this movie. Cristina Ricci plays Yellow, Wayne Brady is the stalwart Blue. Craig Ferguson is Gnat the sidekick, Rosie Perez is Red, Owen Wilson is Ricky the Dragon, and Sean Astin is Bumblebee.

Both my girls really enjoyed this. At four and two-years-old, they both sat quietly through the entire 77 minutes! The Hero of Color City is meant for preschool and early elementary children and is suitable for all ages. Even the “monster” King Scrawl is not too scary – my two-year-old wasn’t frightened in the least.

Kay is learning her colours right now, and she loved identifying the colour of each crayon. Tee said her favourite part was when the crayons discovered that (SPOILER ALERT!) King Scrawl was not a monster at all and made friends with him. She also really liked the songs and has since watched the Sing Along bonus feature several times.
