I knew I wanted to use cloth diapers before I ever had my kids. During both my pregnancies, I hunted swap meets and used cloth diaper boards looking for bargains. Yet at Christmas and at my baby shower I received so many cute clothes from friends and family, but not one cloth diaper.
Newborns grow so fast that all those adorable outfits were outgrown in a matter of weeks. In hindsight, I really wish I had registered for cloth diapers instead. When you think about it, diapers are used on a daily basis for two or three years per child, making them a really practical gift. When you give cloth diapers with adorable prints like Glow Bug Cloth Diapers, they’re a really cute gift too!
Glow Bug Cloth Diapers are ethically made in China in their own facility and only sold in packs of 12 prints or booster packs of 6 white diapers. Each pack of 12 diapers comes with 18 microfiber inserts. I know you’re probably wondering if you can buy individual diapers. Offering cloth diapers in packages is one of the core beliefs of Glow Bug Cloth Diapers because they want to make it easy and affordable for anyone to use cloth diapers. Glow Bug offers diapers in bulk to save their customers time and money.
Anatomy of a Glow Bug Cloth Diaper
Glow Bug diapers have a waterproof PUL exterior and come in cute boy, girl, and gender-neutral prints. I received the girl’s Old School print, and I think the retro cassette tapes are awesome! Their range of prints changes annually, and their print releases are always eagerly anticipated.
These diapers have a flat front and elasticized back. They’re one size and advertised to fit from 7-35 pounds. They only come in snaps; there is no hook and loop version. This diaper has 4 rows of 3 snaps on the front to adjust the rise and size of the diaper. There are 2 rows of 10 snaps across the front to adjust waist and leg hole sizing. Glow Bugs don’t have hip snaps, but they do have a third waist snap to help fight wing droop. They have 4 crossover snaps to fit tiny newborn waists.
Here you can see the Revolutionary 360Β° Gusset! It provides extra protection all the way around, and it actually has a little “pocket” in the back to help hold extra runny messes. (Sorry for the visual!) The SlimDry lining helps wick wetness away without adding bulk. Glow Bug diapers use a sleeve design with openings in the front and back and waterproof flaps to keep in leaks. The microfiber insert snaps in to keep it from shifting.
Hereβs how the sizes compare. To adjust the diaper to its smallest size, snap the top row of rise snaps into the bottom row. This is where the crossover snaps come in handy too. Use the next row for the next size up, same for the next row again, and leave the snaps undone for the largest size.
Diaper Fit & Performance
Keira is almost 16 months old and 24 pounds. I’m using my Glow Bug on the second-to-largest setting. Their fit is nice and trim, and the leg elastic is snug enough to prevent gapping. Snaps aren’t quite as adjustable as hoop and loop tape, and I had a little bit of trouble getting the waist done up to the perfect size. Regardless, Keira has worn the diaper up to almost four hours without a leak. Naps were no problem at all! Older babies tend to hold their pee and let it all go at once, and I’ve had other diapers leak because the flow is just too fast for the diaper to absorb. The 360Β° gusset is meant to contain messes, but I think it also helps hold the pee until it can be absorbed. That was a nice bonus I wasn’t expecting!
Keira didn’t poop in this diaper during our testing period so I can’t actually comment on how the 360Β° gusset performs in that area, but I can tell you that I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with gussets in general. I love how they keep messes in, but I hate trying to clean poop out of all the nooks and crannies. Glow Bug has made a helpful video tutorial showing two ways to clean messes out of the gusset. After watching, I feel a little more confident about that aspect.
