For All of the Mothers

This Sunday will be my fourth Mother’s Day. That itty bitty baby is now old enough to know that Mother’s Day is a special day. She’s so excited about “Muvver’s Day” that I’ve been getting handfuls of homemade cards all week. On Thursday I attended my very first Mother’s Day tea at Tee’s preschool. The kids sang “I Love You” (the Barney song), “Skinamarinky Dinky Dink”, and “You Are My Sunshine”. Then in the tea ceremony Tee poured a cup of (iced) tea and carried the teacup over to me oh so carefully. She was so proud that she didn’t spill a drop!

Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate motherhood. I think we all know that motherhood is more than biology though. You don’t need to have given birth to be a mother, and even if your child is no longer with you, you’ll always be a mother. Families can be complex, but the simple heart of motherhood is unconditional love.

Happy Mother’s Day to you, to me, to all of the mothers. To stepmothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, mothers of babies born sleeping or who were never born at all, mothers that were, and mothers to be. I celebrate you!

My plan tomorrow is to sleep in, enjoy breakfast in bed (did you hear that, Chris?), and enjoy my family. What about you?

Happy Mother's Day to All of the Mothers
