The Best Family-Friendly Dining in Surrey is at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co.

If your kids are always well-behaved in public, sit quietly and eat neatly in restaurants, or don’t like pizza, then this post probably isn’t for you.

But if your kids are more like mine – pizza fiends who get bored and kinda whiny while they’re waiting for food – and you live in Surrey, Langley, Delta, or White Rock, then this one’s definitely for you!

Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. opened its fifth location last summer in South Surrey (Unit 105, 5570 152nd Street), and ever since our first visit, this has become hands down our favourite restaurant for family meals out. The casual, friendly, and family-friendly environment means we always feel comfortable, even when the kids get a bit rambunctious.

I love that Rocky Mountain Flatbread knows a colouring sheet and crayons aren’t enough to keep bored kids busy. They keep a big selection of games, books, and toys kids can bring to the table to stay occupied and out of trouble while they’re waiting for their food. Deal a family game of Uno, read a book, or play some magnetic hangman. My kids especially like pretending to make their own meals with the miniature toy stove and play food.

As the name suggests, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. specializes in gourmet artisan flatbread pizzas. The crust is the perfect texture – not too chewy and not too crispy.

But there’s so much more! They also serve a fantastic brunch, amazing organic salads, delicious pasta dishes, distinctive cocktails and mocktails, and a dedicated kid’s menu. Rocky Mountain Flatbread’s brunch, lunch, and dinner menus feature organic local produce, Ocean Wise seafood, and free range organic meats with a huge selection of gluten-wise, vegetarian, and vegan options. Everything is always 100% nut-free. It’s the one place we can eat out with everybody, no matter their dietary restrictions.

If you come by for brunch, be sure to try a brunch pizza and mimosas. They have the usual mimosas made with orange juice, but you must try the guava juice mimosas!

Chorizo Sausage Benny Pizza: spicy tomato sauce, local Chorizo sausage, fresh bell peppers, red onions, sundried tomatoes, Mozzafina di latte, two organic poached eggs, green onions, and Hollandaise sauce (omitted here).

The brunch menu has kid favourites like French toast sticks and Belgian waffles as well as artisan brunch pizzas and other brunch classics.

Lunch and dinner are just as delicious. Appies include fresh organic salads made with local ingredients, bruschetta, cheese plates, antipasto, and stuffed BC mushroom caps. The only problem is three mushroom caps aren’t enough!

Beet & Goat Cheese Salad: beets, arugula, sundried cranberries, goat cheese, crispy lentils, orange & ginger vinaigrette, and local sunflower sprouts.

All pizzas and pastas can be made gluten-free. When it comes to gluten-free options at other places, we’ve been used to dry, unpalatable pizza crusts and mushy pasta. But not here! Hubby can’t tell the difference between the regular flatbread and gluten-free flatbread – both are the right amount of crispy and the ideal canvas for Rocky Mountain Flatbread’s gourmet pizza toppings. Their gluten-free pastas are perfectly al dente and lightly dressed with just the right amount of sauce.

Bacon & Potato Artisan Pizza: garlic oil base, local roasted potatoes, leek, caramelized red onions, double-smoked bacon, cheddar, chipotle drizzle, and green onions.

Maple Bacon Three Cheese Penne: organic penne, double-smoked bacon, cream, sauteed leeks, aged cheddar, Mozzarella, Parmesan, and caramelized red onions.

But the best part is the pizza-making for kids on Sunday and Monday evenings from 5:00-7:00 pm. Aided and abetted by one of the friendly staff, kids get their own piece of dough to roll out, then add pizza sauce, cheese, and their choice of toppings before the chef puts their creation in the forno fired pizza oven.

(While the kids are busy becoming pizza chefs, this is the perfect time to peruse Rocky Mountain Flatbread’s drink list of craft beer, BC VQA wines, and house-made cocktails and mocktails!)

But whatever you order, you have to leave room for dessert. Rocky Mountain Flatbread’s famous double chocolate brownies have a crispy crust and warm chewy chocolate centre. Since the plate comes with two brownies, it’s perfect for sharing. (But I totally get keeping them both for yourself. No judgment here!)

And of course Rocky Mountain Flatbread has delicious gluten-free and vegan desserts too. The last time we were here they had Irish cream cheesecake, and it was phenomenal!

Be sure to visit Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. Surrey for your next family brunch or dinner out. And don’t forget to bring the kids for pizza-making on Sunday and Monday nights. I guarantee the whole family will love it!
