Fall Craft: Make a Leaf Book

The leaves in our neighbourhood are stunning right now – bright fiery shades of red and orange and yellow mixed with warm browns and the final green loiterers. Tee loves collecting them, and she asked to make a leaf book like the one she read about in her Max and Ruby book. At first she wanted to tape the leaves onto some paper, but I knew she’d get upset when the leaves dried up and started to crumble. So I decided to try ironing the leaves between pieces of wax paper instead.

This is Tee’s collection of fall leaves. I tore off some pieces of wax paper and Tee arranged the leaves on each piece. We carefully put a second piece of wax paper over top and ironed the wax paper together. I put an old towel down to protect the table and used a receiving blanket to protect my iron’s finish. Of course I did the ironing while Tee supervised from a careful distance.

Here are all the leaves in their little wax paper pages.

And here Tee’s just discovered she can use her leaves as sun catchers. I really like the lacy look of the leaf with the little worm holes in it.

Tee put the pages in the order she wanted and picked her colour thread (pink of course!). I trimmed the edges to even them up then sewed down the middle of the stack of wax paper sheets to make the book.

Next time I’d like to try a slightly different strategy so that Tee could do more of the project herself. Maybe contact paper next time? Despite not getting to do it all herself, Tee still had fun with it though. She’s been showing off her leaf book to everybody and wants to take it to school to share with her class.
