When I was a little girl, I would spend hours happily playing with one of my mother’s wooden spoons. It was a fairy wand, a fencing sword, a drum stick, a jet plane… I imagined myself as a chef, an orchestra conductor, or a dragon slayer.
Now that I have little ones, I’m always looking for simple, classic toys that encourage the same kind of open-ended creative play. Playsilks definitely fit the bill!
I received a set of emerald, royal blue, and rainbow Sarah’s Silks playsilks from Eko Bear, a proudly Canadian retailer of natural, organic, and eco-friendly toys. These lightweight silk squares have rolled hems and measure 35″x35″. They’re hand washable and come in 18 solid colours plus rainbow coloured and star print. Silk is a natural fiber and renewable resource, making playsilks an eco-friendly toy. The dyes used on these playsilks are non-toxic, non-hazardous, environmentally friendly, and free of heavy metals.
Playsilks are incredibly versatile and foster creative play. Their uses are endless! A playsilk can be a cape, a skirt, a flag, a puppet theatre curtain, a tablecloth, a veil, a doll sling, a picnic blanket, or fairy wings. Kids can use playsilks to juggle, perform magic tricks, or just improvise a fun dance routine. My baby loves playing peekaboo with ours, and you could even use one as beautiful and reusable gift wrapping.
While I was taking pictures for this post, I couldn’t help but have a little fun of my own. Here you can see a group of friends chatting around the waterhole. Little do they know who’s eying them hungrily from a distance. What do you think will happen?
