In an ideal world, I would be a perfect mom 100% focused on spending quality time with my kids. We would play, build forts, dance, learn a second language, and create fantastic macaroni crafts from sunup to sundown. I wouldn’t need to clean up, make meals, visit the restroom, or take any kind of self-time. But that’s not me. I’m a real mom, and let’s be honest, there are times when we all need some screen time to keep the kids occupied. I can try to prep dinner while Kay is napping, but Tee doesn’t nap, and she’s not old enough yet to sit and play quietly the entire time I’m wrist deep in raw chicken.
Ad-Free Content Customized Specifically For Your Child
But that’s not to say that the kids can have a TV free-for-all! That’s why I was so intrigued when I first heard about Kidoodle.TV, a new ad-free streaming video service designed specifically for kids under 12. The unique part of this service is the ability for you, the parent, to filter all the educational and entertainment programming by age as well as by selecting individual shows. That means it’s completely customizable, and I never have to worry about Tee seeing something she shouldn’t. No ads, and when the time’s up, that’s it. No negotiation required.
Kidoodle.TV is available for your laptop, Mac or PC, iPad, tablets, and smartphone. Streaming is accessible in Canada and in the US, wherever you can access the Internet. The app itself was easy to install on the iPad and on my Android tablet, and a password-protected account lets me access Kidoodle.TV from multiple locations and devices.
I can create up to 5 custom accounts, and each child’s account is secure. I set it so my parental control passcode is required to switch accounts or to access anything other than what I’ve expressly permitted. Every time I open up Tee’s account, I’m asked to set how much time she can watch Kidoodle.TV: from 15 minutes to 3 hours, or unlimited. I just wish accounts were able to remember the time limit I set the last time instead of resetting every time.
New and Retro Programming
I love that Kidoodle.TV offers a nice mix of new and retro kids’ shows. Tee just discovered Yo Gabba Gabba courtesy of Kidoodle.TV. Honestly, I don’t really “get” that show, but she likes it. She also loves Super Why!, and I’m a big fan of the literacy skills that Whyatt/Super Why teaches. They’ve got The Adventures of Paddington Bear, My Little Pony, and National Geographic Wild Chronicles, and I had to smile when I saw Jem and the Holograms on there. I’m not the only one who fantasized about being a secret agent rock star like Jerrica Benton, right? I can’t wait to see what other programming they add as their content library continues to grow!
