I’ve really enjoyed our summer, but I have to admit I’m looking forward to getting back into our school routine. It’s good for the kids, and it’s good for me! What I’m not looking forward to though, is the daily chore of packing lunches and snacks again. I always intend to get everything ready the night before, but well… life happens, you know? Anyway, that’s why I’m always looking for quick and healthy lunch ideas and snack solutions I can put together on the fly.
When I was a kid, ants on a log were a classic school snack: celery, peanut butter, and raisins. They’re easy to make, healthy, and delicious – the trifecta of kids’ snacks! Unfortunately, nowadays many schools are peanut-free, including my kids’ school, so I need fresh alternatives I can safely send with them to school.
Did you know that hummus has a fraction of the calories and fat of peanut butter, but three times the fiber? We’ve been fans of Summer Fresh hummus for a long time, so this was an easy switch to make. All I had to do was wash and dry some cut celery sticks, fill the “log” with Summer Fresh Original Hummus, then top with a few diced red peppers. Easy, healthy, and delicious – yep! Let’s call them red ants on a hummus log!
These are easy to make the night before, but even if I forget and I’m running late in the morning trying to get the kids to school on time, I can still whip these up in just a couple of minutes. The kids have a lot of fun helping to make these celery and hummus snacks, and the best part is they don’t even know they’re healthy!
There’s no need to make the same old snack every day – the variations are endless! Summer Fresh makes a dozen different varieties of hummus so you’re sure to find a few your child and family will love. Next on my list to try are their avocado hummus, sweet potato hummus, and spinach and artichoke hummus.
My girls love putting goat cheese on their hummus, and we’ve tried a couple more variations too: roasted red pepper hummus with diced apple and original hummus with roasted cashews (though be cautious as these are often included in peanut-free zones). The apple and roasted red pepper hummus logs are my favourite.

I love Sabra Hummus it’s not only good as a dip but put into sandwiches, yummm!!!
my kids would like these for school
Thank you for this new snack idea! Always on the lookout for different gluten-free, peanut-free snacks. Hummus is a big hit in our home. One of the favourites is hummus spread on a gluten-free wrap, topped with goat cheese & diced green onions. Then roll it like a log and slice into large coin size pieces. With carrot, celery & red/green pepper sticks, this has been an often requested lunch.
Great idea! I’ve done this with peanut butter, but hummus is a great idea!
This is an awesome idea! I don’t like peanut butter so we don’t do ants on a log but my kids & I all love Hummus! I can’t wait to try it.

I just tried some hummus from this brand at a staff party yesterday – it was amazing. I’ve never been a huge fan of hummus, but I believe it was a Carmelites onion flavour – delicious.
Great idea for adults or kidlets… Now if I could get my kids to eat celery… Lol
