Caring for Itchy Winter Skin #AveenoCA #AveenoBabyCA

We just celebrated Eczema Awareness Month this November, and that made me wonder: how much do you know about this common skin condition that affects close to one in five children?

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, characterized by dry skin and reddened itchy patches. Eczema usually appears before age two, though fortunately most children eventually grow out of it. Kay hasn’t quite outgrown hers yet, but it’s definitely better than it was. Now she only has mild flare-ups when the weather changes, like around this time of year. Kay’s cheeks get red and flaky, and for the last couple of weeks, she’s been rubbing and scratching at her poor little hands, especially at bedtime.

There is no known cure for eczema, but it can be treated and controlled. That’s why it’s critical to be aware of common eczema triggers. Certain foods like cow’s milk, peanuts, soy, wheat, fish, and eggs can trigger flare-ups for some children, as well as weather changes, contact or inhaled allergens, and irritating soaps and detergents.

It’s important to choose extra mild cleansers and creams. Dermatologist-recommended AVEENO Baby Wash & Shampoo is soap-free and hypoallergenic so it’s gentle enough for Kay’s sensitive skin. It gets her clean without drying out her skin, and yes, I’m a fan of two-in-one products that save me time and shelf space. AVEENO Baby Daily Lotion after her bath helps lock in moisture and keeps her skin soft and hydrated.

But winter weather leaves skin dryer and more easily irritated which makes it a great time to switch over to AVEENO’s Baby Eczema Care line. Each Baby Eczema product has received the Eczema Society of Canada Seal of Acceptance which means that they’re free of ingredients known to be irritating to sensitive skin and they’ve undergone dermatologist formulation review.

Eczemic skin is already drier than normal and more prone to infections, so it needs extra TLC. AVEENO’s steroid-free and fragrance-free Baby Eczema Care Body Wash and Eczema Care Moisturizing Cream help soothe the itch, dryness, redness, and irritation of eczema with colloidal oatmeal. (There are also grown-up versions of Active Natural Eczema Care Body Wash and Moisturizing Cream for my own dry, itchy skin!)

The most important thing for eczema-prone skin is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Eczema Care Moisturizing Cream is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and steroid-free. Its triple oat formula (oat oil, oat extract and colloidal oatmeal) with ceramides gives quick relief from dry, tight, and itchy skin.

When I saw that AVEENO Baby had introduced a new Eczema Care Nighttime Balm with two and a half times the glycerin for even more moisturizing power, I was really eager to try it out!

night balm
Unlike the usual creams or lotions, this is a concentrated balm with a thick jelly texture. It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, steroid-free, and allergy-tested to be safe for sensitive skin. I’ve been giving it to Kay every night for her little dry, itchy hands, and she says it helps them feel better. When I give Kay a dollop, I sneak a little for my own hands too, and I love how hydrated and itch-free they feel!
