Family Life Wordless Wednesdays

“But Now I Am Six”

Exactly six years ago today, I was tossing and turning in bed, wondering if my cramps were the first sign of labour. At 37 weeks and 4 days, it was a little earlier than I expected, but I knew I was technically full-term. I remember lying there, alternately terrified of giving birth and fantasizing about how it would feel to hold our baby in my arms.

Meeting her for the first time.

Six years later and here I am, up late again, this time trying to put into words how much I adore this clever, loving, funny, stubborn, generous, self-confident, and freewheeling little being. But you know what? I can’t. There are no words. So it’s fitting that this is a “Wordless” Wednesday post.

As Tee’s sixth birthday came ever nearer, this poem by A.A. Milne kept running through my head. I remember learning this poem as a precocious six-year-old myself, never suspecting I would be the mother of my own six-year-old one day. So I’ll just leave you with it.

When I was One,
I had just begun.

When I was one

When I was Two,
I was nearly new.

When I was two

When I was Three,
I was hardly Me.

When I was three

When I was Four,
I was not much more.

When I was four

When I was Five,
I was just alive.

When I was five

But now I am Six, I’m as clever as clever.
So I think I’ll be six now for ever and ever.

Now I am 6

~”The End” by A.A. Milne

  • A beautiful poem for a beautiful girl. Doesn’t time fly? And oh my, those cakes are stunning

  • Such a glorious tribute! I can’t imagine being there in 5 years and 3 months!!! But I look forward to it (though I do not wish it to come faster, moments seem to speed by as a mom!!!) Happy birthday to your beautiful girl

  • I just went through the same thing this year! My son was born on January 17th, 2010 and he wasn’t due till February 9th, 2010. I knew he would come early but not that early. The years have passed and you would think they are 16 year olds more than 6 year olds. What a beautiful poem!

  • My LO is only 3 months old, but I’m terrified about how quickly it’s going. I don’t want him to grow up this fast! LoL

  • Such a sweet post. Happy birthday to her! My oldest celebrated her 8th birthday last month and we enjoyed looking back at her last several birthdays. Watching them grow up is the greatest!

  • I love seeing posts about people’s kids and growing up I wish I would have done yearly pictures of my kids my daughter is about to turn 6 I guess she’ll be 6 forever and ever hahaha

  • I love this poem and this idea. And, wow… cakes! My little had a crooked carrot cake for her first birthday, haha.

On a more serious note—I think it was on Facebook that you mentioned how a mother is born when her first child is born. It’s a beautiful concept that has stuck with me.

  • How quickly they grow up. My granddaughter just turned 6 and what a difference. Your daughter is becoming a beautiful young woman. You should be very proud.
