#BadMoms Movie Opens July 29: We’re All Bad Moms!

Bad Moms

You may have caught some of my pictures and my sneak peek post earlier this month, but here’s the whole story. Three weeks ago I was invited to Los Angeles for an advance screening of the eagerly anticipated comedy Bad Moms at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank.

It was a whirlwind trip from the moment I left home. After a comedy of errors including accidentally taking my expired passport to the airport and a wonderful husband who made the drive to the airport with the kids in their pyjamas in just under 45 minutes to drop off my current passport, I made it on the plane just in time. Whew!

From the airport we rushed to a showing of the stop motion animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings (more on this later), and then over to the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank for a Bad Moms party and screening.

Just before the movie, we were welcomed by the cast and surprised by a full on Flo Rida concert! We all partied like wild ones and got low low low low low low low low. What an amazing experience!

And then we kicked back to watch the movie:
In this new comedy from the writers of The Hangover, Amy has a seemingly perfect life – a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However she’s over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she’s about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence – putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.

The audience of moms howled with laughter throughout the movie, because we’ve all experienced the stress of trying to be everything to everyone. We’ve all had those moments and those feelings (and that mom bra too). Who hasn’t wanted to quit, even just for a little while?

The cast of Bad Moms are all moms themselves, and I think that’s why they’re able to be real about the frustrations and torments of motherhood, while still being hopelessly in love with their kids. Just like the rest of us!

Like that time when hubby and I went to the dentist’s office for a check-up not long after Tee was born. Just before I got in the dentist’s chair, I loosened Tee’s car seat straps so she could sleep more comfortably in her bucket seat. After our appointment, Chris carried her out and put her seat back in the car. You probably see where I’m going here. I didn’t realize she wasn’t properly strapped in until we got home. I felt like such a bad mom, but clearly I’m in good company because Mila Kunis told us about the time she did the exact same thing!

The day after the screening, we had a chance to grab some appies and a mimosa and sit down with Mila, Kathryn Hahn, Christina Applegate, and Annie Mumolo. They chatted with us, answered questions about their roles in the movie, and shared their own bad mom moments.

(Isn’t Mila so pretty with her pregnancy glow here? Congratulations!)

When we sat down to take a photo with the stars, there was this kind of funny, kind of awkward moment when two make up artists appeared from out of nowhere and started buzzing around Kathryn and Mila to touch up their make up. Of course the rest of us regular, sweaty and sticky moms didn’t have that luxury, and Kathryn joked, “Imagine if I had this as a regular mom just walking around in the grocery store!”

Okay, maybe they’re not all that regular when they’re doing promotion for a big budget movie, but the stories they tell of their own mom moments sure feel genuine to me. Like that time we forgot to do up the baby’s car seat. And all the times the kids woke us up at 5 in the morning to fix a toy or get them a snack. Or that witching hour between dinner and bedtime. We’ve all had these moments, and there were lots of knowing nods from the moms in attendance on the patio.

We also had the chance to hear producer Suzanne Todd and Bad Moms writers and directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore talk about the process of writing and producing this hilarious movie. Wonder what two men know about being a mom? Well, they’re both dads and inspired by their own wives’ hard work and mom experiences. From the movie, it’s clear they were listening!

Let’s be honest. We’re all “bad moms”. None of us know everything and none of us are perfect. We all have times when we want to throw in the towel, and this movie lets us know we’re not alone in that.

Embrace your inner bad mom and take a night off to see this hilarious ode to motherhood! Bad Moms is now playing at theatres everywhere.
