Greater Vancouver Events for #PinkShirtPromise {ET Canada Experience Contest Alert!}

Pink Shirt Day is right around the corner. Do you know the story behind the pink shirt? This national anti-bullying day of action started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two high school students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, witnessed another student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. In response, the two friends brought 50 pink shirts to school and mobilized their fellow classmates to wear them in a gesture of solidarity with the bullied boy.

This year’s Pink Shirt Day falls on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, and represents an opportunity for all of us to take a stand together and show our solidarity, just like those students did on the very first Pink Shirt Day. So wear your pink shirt and make a #PinkShirtPromise to show your support!

What's your #PinkShirtPromise?

For the second year in a row, Shaw Communications and its key partners are teaming up in support of the Pink Shirt Promise Campaign – a national initiative aimed at ending bullying and cyberbullying across Canada.

Between February 9 and 24, Shaw is encouraging Canadians to work toward ending bullying by sharing their personal pledges on social media using the hashtag #PinkShirtPromise. Or you can take a photo of yourself with a friend making a pinky promise to help stop bullying, using the hashtag #PinkyPromise.

Metropolis at Metrotown – Burnaby, BC

Metropolis at MetrotownFor my readers on the other side of the bridge, Metropolis at Metrotown is also hosting a #PinkShirtPromise event leading up to Pink Shirt Day. Customers are invited to add their promise to help end bullying on the Post-it Pink wall in Grand Court. Customers can also see their photo larger-than-life on the 70 foot elevator light curtain. For every promise posted, Metropolis at Metrotown will donate $1 to the CKNW Orphans’ Fund, up to $5000, to help end bullying in our community.

If you can’t make it into the mall, you can also make your #PinkShirtPromise pledge online. $1 will go to the CKNW Orphans’ Fund for every digital promise made, and one lucky grand prize winner will be awarded a $500 shopping spree and a $500 gift card for a local charity!

Wear your pink shirt to Metropolis at Metrotown on February 24, Pink Shirt Day, to support the cause. Students from nearby Maywood Community School will be committing random acts of kindness to surprise and delight shoppers and performing a flash-mob dance in the Grand Court at 11:30am.

  • Oh, very cool! Am going to check out the #PinkShirtPromise campaign and see if there are any events being held in Toronto. Definitely a great campaign to support! Also need to check out the Shaw hotspots! Never heard of this program before, so thanks for the heads up. 🙂

  • It’s great that there are a lot of events going on to raise awareness about bullying. I hope that the message gets through to those who need it the most.
