Read with DK Books and Grab Your Free Activity Kit for Star Wars Reads Month

We celebrate Star Wars Reads Day every year, but this year it’s an entire Star Wars Reads Month! All October long we’ve been celebrating the joy of reading and the universal appeal of Star Wars to encourage reluctant or hesitant readers to pick up a book.

Star Wars Reads

DK Books has a huge catalogue of Star Wars books for every age and reading level. This year I’m spotlighting two new updated editions for collectors and giving away one of these to a lucky reader!

Star Wars: Complete Locations

Star Wars: Complete Locations

This beautifully illustrated hardcover volume is a comprehensive source book for key planets, locations, and buildings across the Star Wars galaxy. Organized movie by movie, Star Wars: Complete Locations features detailed and full-colour 3D maps, labelled cross-sections, and information boxes on each page, three double-page spreads, and a complete index in the back. One of those extended spreads depicts the Echo Base on Hoth (Episode V), a particularly impressive four-page wide map showing its sheer scale with each individual building carefully labelled. Other spreads cover the Mos Espa Arena from Episode I, and information about the Starkiller Base from Episode VII.

The original Complete Locations book was published in 2005, and this updated edition released in September of this year adds a new section on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens covering Jakku, Rey’s home inside the Imperial walker (shown on the cover), Maz’s Castle, the Resistance Base, and the Starkiller Base. While it’s nice to have an up-to-date source covering all seven current movies in the series, if you already own the 2005 edition it may not be worth getting this new edition for something like 14 new pages. As we do not have the older edition, Complete Locations is a welcome addition to our Star Wars library. It offers a fascinating look behind the scenes at the world-building details that make the Star Wars galaxy feel so compelling.

Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual History, Updated Edition

Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual History, Updated Edition

Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual History provides a comprehensive historical timeline of all things Star Wars. Starting from George Lucas’ childhood science fiction influences in the 1940s and 50s and the early ideas that would grow into the massive Star Wars franchise, Year by Year explores and illustrates the entire timeline through to present day: the movies, significant works from the Expanded Universe (books, comics, video games), important developments in the Star Wars toy lines, key people associated with Star Wars, and the larger cultural context in which the Star Wars franchise is located.

Under the sturdy slipcover featuring Kylo Ren and Darth Vader, the front cover of the book itself features Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars: Rebels, Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for Darth Vader, and Rey, while the back cover has clone troopers, Yoda and Luke in the Dagobah swamp, and another concept piece of the Death Star trench run. The inside front cover has a sleeve attached within which you’ll find two art prints from The Force Awakens by Doug Chiang and by Erik Tiemens and Iain McCaig.

This hefty 368-page tome has been updated and expanded to bring it up to date with all the key dates and significant Star Wars events since its first publication in 2010. The updated section starts with George Lucas’ retirement and the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, then covers the end of The Clone Wars computer generated series, the new Star Wars: Rebels cartoon, Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and early development of Rogue One due out later this year. The attention to detail and love of the subject matter comes through on every page. This is a must have for any Star Wars fan.
