Softstar Sandals for Mom and Daughter

A couple of years ago, Kay and I did a review together of mother and daughter Softstar sandals. We loved our sandals so much, we thought it would be fun to revisit and update our review!

How she’s grown!

Kay has long since outgrown hers of course, but here are my very well-worn and well-loved sandals after wearing them through the spring, summer, and fall for two years. They’ve been sweat on, rained on, and once had a cup of soda dropped on them too. They’re definitely battle-scarred, but they’re still unbelievably comfortable and haven’t had one tear or loose stitch in two years

The quality of these sandals is phenomenal. I remember back when I first got them, I was unsure if the thin rubber soles would hold up. Yet here we are two years later. Some of the tread is worn, but these soles have outlasted several pairs of shoes bought after I got these sandals, and there’s still plenty of life left in them.

In fact, we loved our sandals so much, we couldn’t wait to get our feet into a new set of mother and daughter Softstar sandals this summer!

Softstar handcrafts all their minimal shoes and sandals in their Oregon workshop from breathable, formaldehyde-free leather and ultra thin, ultra durable rubber Vibram soles. The flexible soles mimic barefoot walking, a must for developing feet like Kay’s. They’re really comfortable for my mom feet too!

I was excited to pick out another pair of Custom Solstice Sandals ($110) for this review. Softstar offers 17 colours of buttery soft leather to choose from, including a couple of vegetable tanned options from the Ecopell tannery in Germany, considered to be the most natural and sustainable leather in the world. I chose shiny pewter leather this time, with a white leather flower applique.

The new sandals are a little snugger than the old pair (cuz leather stretches over the course of two years), but they’re perfectly comfortable and, best of all, there’s no break-in period. I promise you: there’s no chafing, no blisters, no rubbing. I was able to walk around in these all day from the very first time I put them on.

Kay designed this pretty pair of Custom Child Sandals ($60+) herself in matching pewter full grain leather with a shiny ruby strap and a sweet flower cut-out detail. When you design your own child sandal you can choose from 23 colours of leather, 9 cutout motifs or a sewn on leather flower, plus you have the option of laces, an elastic closure, or Velcro. Kay upgraded to the Velcro because it’s the easiest for her to put on and take off by herself.

Sandal sizes tend to run a bit big, so Softstar recommends going a size down from their regular size. We followed their advice and got a size 10, and they fit Kay comfortably with a little extra room to grow. The toe openings are designed small enough that little feet don’t slip through the front, even if you order sandals that are a bit roomier.

Our sandals are just as comfortable as we remember, and we wear them everywhere!
