Earlier this year I met Kristin, a local mama of two and the talented artist behind Mouse & Moose, an Etsy boutique that specializes in handcrafted wool felt toys and dress-up props. Last spring, Kristin made Tee this gorgeous custom princess crown for her birthday (which the girls still play with all the time), so I’m already familiar with the fantastic workmanship that goes into Mouse & Moose pieces. I’m thrilled that this time round I get the chance to check out her play masks!

Kristin sent us a cat mask for Kay and a tiger mask for Tee. These are works of art, I tell you!

This half-style mask is recommended for younger children since the eye holes are bigger and the mouth is left partially uncovered.

And here’s a ferocious (but still sharp-dressed for Movember) tiger prowling through the jungle. Look out!

I think that Tee may still be just a little young for this full coverage style, as the mask over her nose and mouth starts to bug her after a little while. She doesn’t want to stop playing with it though, she just takes breaks from wearing and keeps on playing tiger anyway. Of course her favourite game is roaring and chasing her kitty sister around the house.

Here’s a close up of each mask. I want to show you the backs too so you can see how beautifully well-made they are, even on the unfinished side.

Each mask is made from multiple pieces of wool felt to create the three dimensional look. Every stripe on this tiger’s face is a separate piece of hand cut wool felt! These truly are a labour of love.

Every piece is securely sewn with no loose stitches or threads. I can tell that these will last all the way through my daughters’ pretend play years, at which point they’ll be ready to be passed down to the next generation of tigers and kitty cats. And if you were wondering about how to keep these clean? Wool is naturally antibacterial, so gentle spot cleaning is usually sufficient (try to avoid hard scrubbing).

Just like last time, working with Kristin was a dream. She was able to customize the cat mask to look like our own cat, Zephyr, and she shortened the elastic a little to fit Kay’s head. As a mom of two little ones herself, she’s very conscious of making every detail perfect for your kids. I honestly can’t recommend her enough.
