Mally Bibs: The Original and Ultimate Leather Bib #TWCMgifts

I’m sure it’s no surprise to hear that my toddler is a messy eater. In fact, I think it’s a given. Toddlers want to be independent, and that includes self-feeding. “I do it!” Back when my oldest was in that stage I used cloth bibs, but they looked really icky and stained and didn’t provide enough coverage. Then I discovered pocket bibs, and those have been my preferred style of bib ever since. The bibs still get kind of gross and stained, but I thought they were my best option. Until I saw leather Mally Bibs on Instagram, that is. I was curious about a bib made out of leather, and then when I saw they were handmade locally in Canada, I knew I had to learn more!

Mally Designs is the home of the original leather baby bib. Mally Bibs are made entirely from durable, lightweight, and CPSIA safety tested and approved leather. Each is sewn with heavy-duty nylon thread that won’t rot or stain. Mally Bibs come in 65 different whimsical designs, and in regular and toddler sizes. I received this toddler bib to try out in one of their newest (and cutest) designs.

I love all the carefully stitched details on this sneaky raccoon peeking out from the pocket. Or as Keira calls it, the “kitty daccoon”.

You can tell a lot of time and thought went into designing and developing the practical details that make this the last bib you’re ever going to need to buy. The bib is reversible, and the durable leather on both sides is completely wipeable and won’t stain. It closes with strong magnets instead of Velcro or snaps. The magnets themselves slide back and forth in little enclosed pockets to adjust the neck hole to the perfect size. They’re completely enclosed on all sides so I have no concerns about my child accidentally swallowing one.

I love love love the magnetic clasp. Over time Velcro loses its stickiness, and snaps are too hard for the kids to open and close by themselves. In terms of storage, I have a (non-magnetic) stainless steel fridge, but if you have a regular fridge, the magnet makes it ultra convenient to keep it stuck on the fridge itself when not in use. No hunting around for a bib while baby’s food gets cold!

One side has a pocket to help catch liquid spills. It is a soft pocket though (made of leather like the rest of the bib) which means it doesn’t stay open very well to catch dropped pieces of solid food. That’s the only thing I wish could be improved. Perhaps if the pocket part was cut a bit larger than the bib underneath, the pocket would bow out while in use and catch more food crumbs.

Mally Bibs started back in 2005 when Nicole, the mama behind the bib, dropped food on her baby’s leather shoe and noticed how easily it wiped off. Nowadays, this proudly Canadian company also handmakes a host of quality leather products including the newest addition to the Mally Designs lineup,  Mally Mocs! Made with the same soft, comfortable baby-safe leather as Mally Bibs, coordinating Mally Mocs feature a hidden elastic, a sweet little fringe around the ankles, a tab at the heels to help pull them on, and non-slip suede soles in charcoal grey (the better to hide dirt).
