What’s your New Year’s Resolution? To get healthy? Learn to play the guitar? Maybe to save up for a family vacation? How about to read more?
I know I don’t get to read as much as I would like to. (Though I did actually get to finish the Divergent series over the Christmas holidays!) It seems like there’s always something else that needs to be done first, but after almost five years of this crazy parenting thing, I’ve come to really believe that we need to take some time for ourselves too. Even if it means the house stays messy or the dishes get missed for one night. Even if it’s just for a few minutes when the kids are finally in bed. I also remind myself that role modeling a love of reading is one of the best ways to foster the love of reading and of books in my own kids.
I’m always curious what others are reading, so I invited my readers on Facebook to talk about their favourite genres, favourite books, and what they’re looking forward to reading in the new year. I was surprised how many enjoyed science fiction and fantasy just like me! With their help, I’ve put together this Kobo collection of eBooks selected by moms, for moms. These books run the gamut of science fiction to western, romance to mystery. You’re sure to find something in here that intrigues you. With over 4.2 million titles in the Kobo book store ready to be downloaded instantly, Kobo has something for everyone!
But you don’t have to have an eReader to get started. All you have to do is download the FREE Kobo app, and you can start reading on your desktop, iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry, Windows 8, or Windows 8 Phone. Just like that!

The Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is Book One in the Outlander series, combining historical fiction, romance, mystery, adventure, and science fiction/fantasy. Nurse Claire Randall is on her second honeymoon when she is mysteriously thrown back in time to 18th century Scotland. Outlander is now a TV drama series on Starz.
One for the Money by Janet Evanovich is the first book in this series of romantic adventure mystery novels starring Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter. This book was made into a film a couple of years ago, starring Katherine Heigl as Stephanie.
The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds. In this science fiction novel set in the 25th century, Prefect Tom Dreyfus and his partner, a hyperpig named Sparver, police the Glitter Band, a collection of space habitats orbiting the planet Yellowstone. They must figure out what’s really going on behind the scenes to save their society from collapse.
The Storyteller by Jody Picoult. Sage Singer strikes up a friendship with Josef Weber, an elderly man in her grief support group. But when he confesses a dark secret from his past, she must make some hard moral decisions. #1 New York Times Bestseller.
Wild Cow Tales by Ben K. Greene. This collection of 13 short stories is set in the Old West.
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Rachel is a young Manhattan attorney who drunkenly ends up in bed with her best friend’s fiancé one night. What happens when she finds herself having feelings for him?
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. This is the first book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries starring Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress who falls in love with a vampire. These books are the source material for the hit HBO TV show True Blood.
All the Light We Can Not See by Anthony Doerr. Set in World War II, this is the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and Werner, a German orphan turned Nazi soldier, whose paths cross in occupied France while they both try to survive the war. New York Times Bestseller
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Where is Amy Dunne, and is her golden boy husband responsible for her disappearance? Now a movie starring Ben Affleck. #1 New York Times Bestseller.
The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. An inspirational fable about the first man on earth to measure time. Banished for centuries for his hubris, Dor must redeem himself by teaching a suicidal teen girl and a terminally ill businessman the true meaning and value of time.
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. This fantasy novel begins one of the longest and most detailed fantasy epics ever written as Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve flee from danger and search for answers when their home comes under attack by trollocs.
The Family Tree by Sheri S. Tepper is one of my personal favourites. In this ecological fantasy, the Earth has finally had enough, and suddenly the trees and plants are taking back the planet. Police officer Dora Henry’s search for a solution will take her to surprising places and some unusual friends.
