Little Tikes Go Green Playhouse: Eco-Friendly Backyard Fun!

When we were house hunting, a backyard was non-negotiable. We didn’t have kids yet, but I already dreamed of playing with our future children in the yard. I imagined throwing tea parties, running through the sprinkler, playing house, and everything else I loved doing in my own yard when I was a little girl.

Well, we got our backyard, and it’s the perfect setting for the Little Tikes Outdoor Go Green Playhouse we recently received for review. The Go Green Playhouse incorporates eco-friendly features and activities to help kids learn about environmentalism through imagination-driven play. We’re all set for eco-friendly pretend play this summer!

It took hubby a bit less than two hours to put this outdoor playhouse together, even with his little helpers. The instructions are straightforward for the most part, but be aware not all the screw holes are predrilled, so you will need to have an electric drill on hand as well as your trusty Phillips screwdriver.

And here’s the playhouse in action! Inside there’s enough space for two kids, three if they’re really cozy.

I love how Little Tikes always adds lots of cute details to their playhouses, like these little ledges, moulded coat hooks, and that sweet embossed bonsai tree.

My kids help with the recycling at our house, so they understood right away what the two little baskets were for. One is labeled for household containers, and the second for mixed paper.

There’s a working LED light inside (you can see it on the wall panel to the right of the sink) powered by a real solar panel. Cool! On the same side you can see the non-battery operated doorbell and the mail slot too. On the sink piece itself, there’s a play stove burner with a dial to the left, and a moulded miniature cutting board on the right.

Our spring has been surprisingly dry this year, so to test out the Go Green Playhouse rain system, I ended up just pulling out the garden hose. The water runs down the roof and collects in the gutter, which directs it down the drain pipe and into the rain barrel. The girls can fill up their watering can and the sink with water from the barrel.

Tee’s favourite feature is the kitchen “faucet,” an actual working pump that the kids can use to simulate running water. The playhouse also comes with a miniature shovel, rake, and watering can for gardening play. We haven’t gotten around to filling the garden box with flowers yet, but the kids have been using their gardening tools to “take care” of the flowers in our regular garden. They’re well-watered, that’s for sure!

I would say the this playhouse is best suited for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s exactly the right size for three-year-old Kay, but six-year-old Tee is just a little too tall. Not that it stops her from getting in there anyway of course!

The Little Tikes Outdoor Go Green Playhouse is a really fun way to teach kids about reducing their environmental footprint. My girls are learning about water conservation, sorting their recyclables, developing a rudimentary idea about solar panels, and even taking up gardening. Since we set up the playhouse they’ve been spending more time than ever in the backyard. They love their little home away from home!

The Go Green Playhouse retails for $269.99 USD and $349.99 CAD, but you can often find it on sale so shop around.

Available at Amazon, Toys”R”Us, Sears, and Walmart.

  • I love Little Tikes!! I love how they are keeping up with the times, and a great way to teach your child about recycling while playing, I must say the favourite part for me is the rain barrel, awesome!!

  • I love this little house and the important lessons it teaches. Thanks for the reference to size, as even though they give measurements, I know I am guilty of reading one thing and believing another. If only my yard were bigger and my kids a bit smaller…

  • This ‘Little Tykes Go Green’ Playhouse will be the envy of your neighborhood. Not only do your girls have a ‘house’ to play in all summer, but they will learn so much about conservation of water, how solar power works and to learn to grow some of their own food. I think I was born much too soon as this playhouse would be a dream come true. Thank you for all the information you gave us about this delightful little house.

  • Little tykes is amazing…I sold all my kids little tykes last yr, quite cheap actually BUT mine was a good 20 yrs old, had gone thru both my kids, my nephew and then my niece . The house even fell off the back of a half ton on the way to the farm for my nephew. The coupe was still drive able when I sold it (although the gas cap was off ) The house still had everything and it all still opened and closed. I will certainly be buying little tykes for my grandchildren

  • What a marvellous play house this is. Love all the extras that come with it, like the rain barrel how cool is that? This play house certainly helps children learn about protecting our environment and that they too can do their part – I love it 🙂
