Cloth Diapering Giveaways Reviews

Is Weleda’s White Mallow Diaper Rash Cream Safe for Cloth Diapers? {Plus a #Giveaway}

As an experienced cloth diapering mama and blogger, a common question that comes up time and time again is about using diaper rash creams with cloth diapers. Many mamas worry about staining or repelling if they use the wrong diaper cream.

Weleda White Mallow diaper rash creamI’ve used Weleda’s Calendula Diaper Care Cream in the past, and it worked well to reduce diaper rash and irritation. So I was very interested when Weleda recently asked me to check out their new White Mallow Diaper Rash Cream.

Weleda’s White Mallow Diaper Rash Cream is fragrance-free and made especially for sensitive skin. It contains 86% organic ingredients including organic white mallow extract to soothe sensitive skin, organic coconut oil to moisturize, sesame seed oil to help heal and nourish skin, and 14% pharmaceutical grade zinc oxide to relieve skin irritation.

Keira’s getting older which means she doesn’t usually get serious rashes the way younger babies do. So instead we used the cream for overnights and it successfully kept away all the pinkness and irritation that often happens when a toddler sleeps in a wet diaper all night long. Of course overnight diapers need to absorb a lot of liquid, so I would never want to use anything on them that might make them less absorbent.

Is Weleda's White Mallow Diaper Rash Cream compatible with cloth diapers?

So I tested the cream first on a cotton booster and on a piece of fleece like you’d find in a pocket diaper lining. I smeared cream on both then washed and dried them with my regular cloth diaper laundry. After four trials, the cotton liner washed completely clean each time, and the fleece had a small, barely visible oil stain when I held it at just the right angle.

Now, honestly there’s a lot more going on in my baby’s diapers that will stain them than a little bit of cream, so that’s not a big deal for me. You can always use a liner if it is for you, but either way it didn’t impact the function. I feel comfortable using this cream with my diapers.

Weleda Baby Calendula

Last year we had the opportunity to try out Weleda’s Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash. This time, Weleda sent us some other products from the Calendula line to try, including their Calendula Baby Oil, Calendula Body Lotion, and Calendula Weather Protection Cream.

Weleda's Baby Calendula line

Like all Weleda products, they’re free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and colourants. I really like the fresh, clean, herbal smell of calendula. The shampoo and body wash cleans gently and doesn’t dry out my girls’ hair or skin. We don’t really do baby massage anymore (my youngest is two), but the baby oil works really well for extra moisturizing after their baths. It absorbs within a couple of minutes and doesn’t leave their skin feeling greasy or stain their clothes. The body lotion is velvety smooth and also absorbs quickly. (I’ve been using this on my own arms and legs too!)

For over a month now, we’ve been enjoying spring weather and flowers here on the West Coast. The cherry blossoms have even been out for a while too! It’s been a surprisingly mild winter here, especially compared to what our friends in the rest of the country have been dealing with – record breaking snowfalls and freezing temperatures. I always feel lucky to live out here, but this winter even more than usual.

Weleda Baby Calendula Weather Protection CreamYou’d think with such mild temperatures we wouldn’t have any winter skin issues, but the fact of the matter is, we still get windburned cheeks and dry skin. Keira in particular gets dry, red rashy patches on her cheeks.

I’ve been using Weleda’s Calendula Weather Protection Cream and it does a good job of soothing and protecting her chapped cheeks. It’s called a cream, but the consistency is similar to petroleum jelly (though there is no petrolatum in here!). I love that the ingredients are natural and non-toxic enough that I can even use it as a lip balm on my kids too. It’s a tad pricy for the size of the tube, but if your baby has those red, rashy patches on her face, this will not only help heal them but also create a barrier against further irritation.
