Introducing Hasbro’s New Disney Princess Ariel #DreamBigPrincess

I’m pretty sure that The Little Mermaid was the first VHS movie my family ever bought. It doesn’t seem like 27 years ago, but I clearly remember watching and singing along with this Disney classic over and over and over. Sure, the movie turns out almost exactly opposite to the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, but I’ve gotten over it by now. What always stood out to me though, was Ariel’s insatiable curiosity. Long before she ever saw Prince Eric, Ariel yearned to learn about life up on the surface, no matter the cost.

Of course I got our copy of The Little Mermaid as soon as it came out on Blu-ray so I could share it with my girls. This month’s Ariel theme might be for me just as much as it is for the kids!

Little Mermaid

Can anyone read these lyrics without bursting into song?

Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat?
Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?
Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl
The girl who has everything?

Hasbro’s new Disney Princess Royal Shimmer Ariel Doll ($17.99 CAD) has really vibrant red hair, just like I remember from the movie, and her sparkling dress has pretty seahorse and shell designs on it. I don’t think the face mould on this one is as close to the movie character as last month’s Rapunzel, but my girls don’t care.

We also received the Disney Princess Spin & Swim Ariel ($29.99 CAD), and it came with a very interesting side effect. Would you believe that the girls have started begging for baths now? Seriously. They keep asking, “Can we have a bath now?”

The doll is supposed to float upright but I don’t put that much water in the tub. You’d need something like a foot of  water to see it float – so maybe the kids could take it to the pool this summer instead. The girls don’t care though. They like making her swim under the water and watching Sebastian and Flounder spin around her. (There’s a plastic windup in the back to make them spin.)

Ariel comes with the tail fin and the blue spinning pieces separate. It may seem like they won’t fit together, but you just have to push them together hard until they click. Once you feel the click, they stay together really well. Sebastien and Flounder are removable so when you have two kids in the tub, you can hand the separate pieces out and (maybe) stave off fights over who gets to play with this toy.

Finally, there’s the Disney Princess Little Kingdom Ariel’s Sea Castle Playset ($29.99 CAD) with tons of cute details that the kids love. It comes with a mini Ariel doll, Sebastian figurine, two swings, a slide, and a separate bathtub vanity piece. It also comes packaged with five snap-in interchangeable decorations and a tiny scrub brush. There are three “bubbles” on the playset that store three of the snap-in pieces, but honestly they’re still almost impossible for my girls to keep track of. Disney Princess Little Kingdom Ariel's Sea CastleI want to give a special mention to the mini Ariel doll that comes with the set. I like that it has a mermaid tail, but I love that the tail has a flat bottom so it can still stand upright. The doll also comes with a soft rubber green dress and peplum that fit over the tail. Like all the Little Kingdom dolls, the pieces are interchangeable with other dolls.
