George Lucas’ Strange Magic Now Available on DVD {Plus FREE Printables!}

I really wanted to see this one in the theatre, but things kept coming up and I never got around to it. Since then I’ve been impatiently waiting for Strange Magic to come out on home video. I’m happy to tell you the wait is over!
Strange Magic DVD

Strange Magic is a music-filled fairy tale about finding true love in the unlikeliest of places. This magical adventure features a host of colorful characters including a princess who has sworn off love, a dubious villain, a slightly nutty Sugar Plum Fairy, a tenacious elf, a mischievous imp, and a knight who is no Prince Charming.

Let’s be honest. Strange Magic did not do that well in the theatres. But what’s important to me is what I think of a movie and what my girls think. I wanted to see it for myself. I knew this would be quirky going in – this is not your standard cookie cutter Disney princess movie. It’s a musical with fairies! What’s not to love?

This was George Lucas’ pet project for the past 15 years. (I think the Fairy King even looks a little like him.) Inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream, this beautifully animated movie is full of the same sorts of romantic hijinks and turnarounds. Yes, Strange Magic is a bit unusual in its use of pop music to move the story along, but several other movies have done it and done it well (think Shrek and A Knight’s Tale). Marianne is a strong, interesting female lead, and I love the message that it’s what inside that counts.

I watched this with my five-year-old, and I’m glad we made it just us. My two-year-old would definitely have been frightened by some of the more intense scenes, so I would recommend this for older children. My oldest and I both enjoyed the fairies, the story, and the singing. The only thing I can’t figure out is why Strange Magic isn’t available on Blu-ray!

Bonus features include:

  • “Creating the Magic”
  • “Magical Mash Up: Outtakes, Tests And Melodies”
