Funky Fluff Cloth Diapers’ New Athletic Wicking Jersey vs. Bamboo Lining

As many of you probably know, Funky Fluff is a company much beloved by This West Coast Mommy, and for good reason! For one, their LUX line is the peak of diapering perfection. And they never stop innovating ways to make it even better.

Funky Fluff, made two big releases this week: their brand new color palette and lining option for the LUX collection. The hype has really been building around this new launch, and I got a first chance look to see what all the buzz is about.

Bringing-Funky-Back-Colours

Their six new colors are really gorgeous, and they’ve all got fun new names: Kryptonite, Mint to Be, Sweet Coraline, Maverick, Aloha, and Razzleberry. I received one in Sweet Coraline with the new athletic wicking jersey lining and one in Mint to Be with their bamboo terry lining to do a comparison.

The Fit

Riley is now almost 7 weeks old and between 8 and 9 lbs (I apologize for the ambiguity, but her next visit to the pediatrician isn’t for a couple of weeks, and my bathroom scale is a liar). Both diapers fit about the same for her, which makes sense since the basic construction of their LUX diapers hasn’t changed with the new inner shell option. I’ve had no problems getting a good fit on her little newborn bum with the smallest rise and leg settings and the second smallest waist setting. The crossover snaps were not necessary for us. The elastic is nice and snug around her legs and back without being too tight.

Brooks is now nearly two years old and 22 lbs, and the LUX diapers fit him nicely as well. It was interesting to see both him and Riley wear the exact same diaper and β€œmeasure in snaps” just how much he’s grown.

Funky Fluff side by side

Aaand now I’m getting emotional over cloth…moving on!

There’s still plenty of room left to grow. We’ve got one rise setting and several leg and waist snaps to go on him. I never thought I would be glad to have two in diapers at the same time, but Funky Fluff diapers are so beautifully made, I’m happy he gets a chance to wear them for a while.

The Fabric

Athletic wicking jersey is the Cadillac of diaper shell liners. As the title suggests, it definitely does wick moisture away from the skin, but it has multiple other special properties as well including stain resistance, breathability, quick dry time, and anti-pilling.

Breastfed poo stains are no joke. I was always changing my wash routine with Brooks and sunning his diapers to try and keep them looking nice, but, truth be told, I’ve gotten a little lazy with Riley. Let’s just say there’s a reason I didn’t buy the bleached white prefolds for her, and it’s not because of the chemicals. Tan covers a multitude of stains.

Funky Fluff bamboo vs. athletic wicking jersey

Funky Fluff’s bamboo terry has a natural tan tinge to it, but the silky, stretchy athletic wicking jersey is bright white, so that resistance to staining really comes in handy. It has held up nicely to those breastfed poos so far and still looks brand new out of the wash.

My babies both have pretty sensitive skin, and the more we can keep moisture wicked away and give those buns a chance to breathe, the better. The bamboo terry fabric does a great job with absorption, but some kind of wicking layer really is a must for my kids. For most of our diaper changes, I have to place an extra fleece liner where it comes into contact with the most liquid. It is so nice to skip this step with the athletic wicking jersey liner. Add their bamboo terry soakers, and you have the perfect combination.

Funky Fluff really scores big on both look and feel. These are definitely some of the best diapers I’ve tried, and they seem to be so comfortable on my kiddos. You know that favorite pair of underwear in your drawer? The one you look forward to wearing? It’s like that, only in diaper form. You can tell that they’ve really thought about what the products feel like for their tiny little customers to wear, and I appreciate the consideration and compassion they put into making this whole dirty diaper business a little more enjoyable for those tiny little people and the big people who do the washing.

  • This review is so helpful. I am new to cloth diapering and I am always looking for good reviews to help me decide whatncloth diapers I want to try out on my newborn.

  • Thank you for sharing the Funky Fluff love!!! This is a lovely review of their newest fabulous products! Just keeps getting better! Huge fan?

  • I’m so excited for the AWJ! My babe is also sensitive to moisture, so I was planning on making liners for her to help keep her dry when wearing bamboo. Now I can get new colours with AWJ and problem solved! Thanks for the great review!

  • I’m super excited to try the Funky Fluff AWJ. The stretchy fabric will definitely extend the lifespan of the diaper, allowing bigger babies to contribute enjoying Funky Fluff!

  • I have not tried clothe diapering because of the stains from baby poo, Especially breastfed. I am now so wanting these LUC diapers for their wicking jersey amd bamboo liners and that the colors are so beautiful. My kids got rashes so staying dry is a must. But being naked allows for a potty mess everywhere haha.

  • Hoping to win for my newest nephew – they are trying cloth diapers and doing quite well with them. This would be a help to them for sure – thanks!

  • I tried Funky Fluff when my girl was little and I wanted to love it so badly but I just could not get a great fit around her legs. I’m sure that part of this was my inexperience so I want to try again. Unfortunately, I sold all the FF diapers I had. Ooops. These colours are all gorgeous and I’m so happy to see a Canadian company doing well!

  • I have used other brands with AWJ, and love the way the poop falls right off it. I would love to try Funky Fluff’s version of it!

  • I’ve never heard of that wicking jersey. My house is always really hot (sun always hitting it) so I’d love this for my baby.

  • I have to say I appreciate the comparison in fit between your two kiddos, Bubby is still in diapers 90% of the time and Punkin will be here in a few months so its nice to get an idea of how that would work.
I also really like the sounds of the awj, do they make those for big people? LOL

  • Thanks for such a thorough review! I am new to cloth diapering so it is nice to get your take on the performance of the AWJ lining with the stain resistance, stretch, and wicking properties.

  • I like how Funky Fluff keeps trying to improve their diapers. I’m glad I waited for them to have diapers with AWJ now!

  • We’ve never tried funky fluff diapers, but I have cloth diapered all of my kids. I like how these diapers adjust for many different sizes. They might fit preemies as well, since you didn’t even need the crossover snaps for a 7 lb baby.

  • Love the way you describe these cloth diapers. I feel I have it right in front of me and can picture my little grandson wearing one. Cloth diapers have come a long way since my diapering day.

  • Thanks for the chance! I am expecting my first baby in April and we have decided to cloth diaper! I have heard many good things about the Funky Fluff and would love to try it!

  • Oooh I wish these were out when my little girl was born last May! As a Funky Fluff 2.0 user, I really appreciate hearing the reviews of the new LUX bamboo and AWJ. It is great to hear how they fit so well for all different sizes because our little 9 month old is tall and thin so sometimes we have a hard time getting a good fit. Thanks for the review!

  • Love the look of these colours!! And that material inside looks soo comfy! I only own one FF, and love it…would really like to try and get one with the breathable fabric…oh and btw your kids are adorable!!! oh my!!!

  • Great Review of these great diapers. My daughter is expecting her 5th child and she uses a lot of the reusable diapers. She loves them. They have come a long way since she was a baby!

  • Thanks for the review and comparison! The majority of our stash is Funky Fluff 2.0 and Lux bamboo (with a few stay dry shells) and we lovelovelove them. Now I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of Kryptonite in AWJ so I can feel and see the difference firsthand!

  • I’m really glad I clicked the link to this blog post – I have yet to try Funky Fluff, or cloth in general as my first is due in May. I very much want to get my hands on some Funky Fluff, but wasn’t planning on buying an AWJ diaper simply based off reading the pros about AWJ. After reading your review, I will have to get at least one to try! I’m also glad to see the comparison on your newborn vs your boy, as I was concerned about fit for my little one on the way. Thanks for the great and helpful review! πŸ™‚

  • This review is great! I can’t wait to give it a try…My son is sensitive to wetness but the stay dry don’t fit as well as bamboo. The AWJ seems like it is the best of both worlds.

  • I love Funky Fluff. I am so curious about the AWJ cover. I am a bamboo lover but I might just have to give the AWJ a try after reading this review. Thank you for the info in this review!

  • I adore these two colours, they are beautiful πŸ™‚ Thanks for another great review, it made for interesting reading.

  • Totally poked through the colors like, “Oh, that ones cute. Ooohh the mint one~ but kryptonites real nice too….*pause* All these color combinations are gorgeous!”
Never even thought to look into athletic wicking diapers! How cool! Are they absorbant, or would you stuff them just like a pocket diaper?
I think I would feel more in my comfort zone with the Bamboo terry cloth though…

    • Athletic wicking jersey is just used for the lining, so you’d still need to stuff the pocket with inserts for absorption. πŸ™‚

  • I have been interested in cloth diapers for a long time, but wasn’t brave enough to take the plunge and try out. Thanks for talking about your experiences, it’s very helpful !

  • Thanks for the review! I’m dying to try the AWJ lined diaper. I like using stay dry as an ai2 because it drys super fast and doesn’t really get wet but I love the stretch of bamboo! And you can have the best of both with the new material! β™‘

  • I wonder how much more the soakers will need to absorb because the awj absorbs no moisture? Bamboo shells at least has some, even if not a lot, of absorption I’m guessing.

  • Haven’t tried Funky Fluff yet, but the Athletic Wicking Jersey looks awesome! And the new colors are great πŸ™‚ I’m 36 weeks pregnant, this would be an awesome win for the new baby!

  • I have always been a bamboo girl because of the stretchiness of the shells. I’m super excited for the stretch AND quick-drying nature of AWJ. ?

  • I love the feeling of AWj but I’ve had it get pilly really quickly and it snags very easily as well :/ I wonder if the quality of the stuff they use is any better? I guess Ill have to try it to find out hah!!

  • I started my cloth diaper journey with bumgenuis, which I love but have been branching out and trying more brands as I grow my stash! I’ve been researching funky fluff for awhile and would like to try out the brand! I love to see it has a good range of fits for your two children as we are planning on expanding our family and hope to be able to use some of our diapers on more than one baby, to see it fit so well on such a little one gives me confidence that it would be a good investment!

  • It is so interesting to see how babies differ. We have an old version of Flunky Fluff and my 14 month old (26.5 pounds) chuck is on the last snaps in all ways. I find it to be a very small diaper which was great in the newborn stage. I would love to try the bamboo and Athletic Wicking Jersey because my guy can out pee the microfiber very easily!

  • Thank you for sharing about Funky Fluff diapers. I’d never heard of them and am right now trying to figure out what system to go with for my twin boys, who will be born in June.

  • Thanks for the review! I love the wicking jersey of other diapers, such as Grovia I’ve tried. And I’ve always wanted to try Funky Fluff, so this makes them even better! Especially for the stain resistance and incredibly fast dry times πŸ™‚ I love that you call it the “Cadillac of diaper liners!” Couldn’t agree more!!!

  • My daughter has sensitive skin, so I am excited to try the new material for her. The new colors are amazing as well!

  • I have been seeing these new Funky Fluff diaper colors all over Facebook! I love them! The AWJ looks like it would be great, especially in the summer! I would love to win for my daughter! We have never tried any Funky Fluff diapers before. Thank you for the opportunity!

  • I am still curious about the AWJ especially excited at the thought of eliminating the need for a fleece liner since AWJ does that already. I really appreciate the close up of the inside material. I like that the AWJ is a brighter white and resistant to staining, who wouldnt like that haha? The Aloha color, yummy!

  • Thanks for this review! I just got a stay-dry Funky Fluff in the mail in an old color, but I’d love to try the new athletic wicking jersey style when baby arrives! I appreciate all the helpful info!

  • The stain resistance of the AWJ has definitely piqued my interest. The breastfed baby poo stains in my yougest’s diapers are driving me nuts!

  • Stain resistance?! I’d love to try that! I have never heard of AWJ but I am definitly very curious to try it now! And the fact that I use AI2 diapers more then anything I think these would probably be great as an AI2 cover

  • Okay, can I just say I am so super excited for AWJ?!? I have a love affair with the funky fluff color combos, but my boy is super chubby and our stay drys are not very stretchy. This may just be a gamechanger for us.
