CostumeChik Review

Boo! Did you realize there are only 28 days left until Halloween? Last year, Tee went trick or treating as a pink fairy and got her very first taste of nacho chips. There couldn’t have been more than a dozen chips in that mini bag, but she was hooked!

Ever since then, one of her favourite games is to pretend she’s trick or treating. She likes to come up to us and anybody else visiting our house and exclaim, “Trick or treat!” She gets lots of (pretend) candy and nacho chips that way. I’ve been reminding her to say, “Thank you! Happy Halloween!” once she’s gotten the loot, but that part’s still a little sketchy. Suffice it to say, she’s very much looking forward to Halloween this year!

I’ve asked her several times what she wants to dress up as, and she gives me a different answer almost every time. Last month she wanted to be Kermit the Frog or a butterfly, lately it’s been a bat or a pumpkin. I thought browsing through CostumeChik’s website might help us decide. They carry a large selection of costumes and costume accessories for men, women, teens, children, and babies. They even have costumes for dogs! (I guarantee you our dog will be cowering in the basement this Halloween though. She has fireworks-induced PTSD.)

There were a bunch of costumes that Tee liked, but for some reason she kept picking out ones for babies. Don’t get me wrong, these costumes are incredibly cute (especially that baby Darth Vader!), but they don’t come in larger sizes. Bah!

Finally, Tee decided on the Toddler High Seas Buccaneer Pirate Costume. She likes to play pirates at home, so I wasn’t surprised she got excited when she saw it on the website.

CostumeChik was kind enough to send me the pirate costume, plus a Star Wars Ewok Infant/Toddler Costume for Kay. (Can you tell we’re Star Wars fans around here?) They’re also sponsoring a giveaway for one lucky This West Coast Mommy reader!

High Seas Buccaneer Pirate Costume

The High Seas Buccaneer Pirate costume comes with the hat, the blouse/vest/skirt combo, the velcro belt with plastic gold-tone belt buckle, a burgundy head scarf, and two boot covers. The boot covers are elasticized at the top to keep them up. The blouse, vest, and skirt are actually a one piece outfit that pulls on over the head.  There’s enough room underneath there to put on a second long sleeved shirt to keep warm while trick or treating on a chilly Halloween evening. The hat, vest, and boot covers are fabric made to look like distressed leather.

I love that the pirate costume comes with basically everything you need. All I had to add was a pair of plain brown leggings to complete the look.

Here’s a snapshot of Tee’s transformation from regular preschooler to swashbuckling pirate!

From average preschooler to swashbuckling pirate!

Tee was certainly a fan. As she was admiring herself in the mirror she told me,

“I love my pirate costume! I look great!”

Then she asked me if she could wear it all day. I asked Tee what she liked best about her costume, and she said,”The hat! No, everything!”

Star Wars Ewok Costume

The Ewok costume comes complete with the furry romper and hood. I love the fuzzy little ears! Again, there’s enough room underneath for a couple of layers of clothing to keep her warm. The romper closes up at the back of the neck with Velcro. The legs also close up the inseam with Velcro for easy diaper changes. I never would have thought of that detail – brilliant!

Kay was so stinking cute in this. The only problem was keeping the hood on! I think she thought we were playing a game of peekaboo because she laughed hysterically every time she pulled it off. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to photograph a one year old? Even with crackers to bribe her, this was the best I could do. I’ve included a little reference picture for you though. I’m sure you get the idea. This Ewok costume is the cutest toddler Star Wars costume I've ever seen!

Nobody’s Perfect

Tee wears size 9 sneakers, and I found the boot covers in the pirate costume were a bit small. With some tugging I was able to get them to just fit, but I’m not sure how they would have worked on a child with bigger feet. I also noticed the ruffled edges on the pirate blouse and the bottom of the skirt are not serged, so I expect them to fray a bit while we’re out trick or treating.
